[Rick Neely] “Images resized in photoshop at 720×486 (300 dpi)”
It’s my understanding that FCP doesn’t utilize extra dpi (more than 72 dpi). So if your image is resized to 720×486 and you start zooming in, then you will be loosing quality. I’d resize your photos to a higher resolution and a lower dpi.
Rule of thumb: when you’re zoomed in as far as you want to go, your photo shouldn’t scale higher than 100.
Exception to the rule of thumb: zoom in more than 100 if there is no other option.
Some one let me know if I’m wrong with the dpi thing please.

We’re running XSAN and that happens to use every so often. We just to what Ben said:

[mark tipple] “can i capture 16:9 dv into fce2?”
Yes. Connect the camera over firewire and put it into playback mode. Open FCP and select Final Cut Express – Easy Setup – DV-NTSC Anamorphic. (or PAL depending on where you live.)
[mark tipple] “ot sure what one to use though so went with the ‘DV-PAL Anamorphic'”
Where do you live? Europe is PAL. North America is NTSC.
Check your settings again. Restart your computer. Try a different Firewire cable. Trash the preferences in home/library/preferences/Final Cut Express/ (or something like that).

I often turn off the airport on the laptop to edit, but then there’s no email 🙁 (or cow)

My guess is that it should work with SD footage, but if you have HD footage, you’re probably out of luck.

[Onomontopeka] “Does anyone else do this? If so, what tape stock do you use?”
We use the Panasonic Mastering tape. Drop outs aren’t worth saving $30-$40 dollars on a show by getting a cheep tape. (Though I don’t know how often people have drop outs with other tape stock.) It’s just makes me feel good to use good tape.
[Onomontopeka] “Also any one had good luck with synching time code? We haven’t.”
I haven’t either, but I’m looking forward to the AJA IO HD with Timecode in. I’m not sure how it will work, but it might accept timecode that was recorded to an audio channel. Also look at:
I haven’t used this either, but it might do what you want it to.
If you can stand digitizing tape with time of day timecode, you could sync your cameras by just starting the run time timecode at the same time on all of the cameras. (you might need to offset it a litte in editing if some one pushed the button couple of frames before or after another the other camera, but it could work.

It depends on which camera.
Most high end cameras have low noise so keeping things properly exposed or even a little under exposed can give you some good flexibility.
With the HVX200, properly expose or over expose it just a little because the noise in the shadows is really hard to deal with in color correction.
That’s my take.
