  • dropping frames on a simple sequence (too much RAM?!)

    Hello,

I have a G5 Quad with 8Gb of RAM that is struggling to playback a simple sequence. It’s running from a SATA drive in the second internal bay.

I subscribe to Larry Jordan’s email newsletter, when I emailed this problem to him he told me it was because I had too much RAM and I should cut back to 4Gb. Is this right? I don’t want to doubt Larry as he obviously knows a lot about FCP I just didn’t know it was ever possible to have too much RAM. I don’t understand the point of being able to have so much RAM if it can have a negative effect on performance.

I’d just like a second opinion.

    Cheers
    Steve

What type of footage are you trying to play?

You could try to take out some ram. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Is your sequence rendered or trying to playback in preview (green or orange bar above it)?

What version of FCP are you using?

    How full is your drive?

Is it a full moon tonight?

There is no thing as too much ram. Ram is good for the system.

Larry Jordan’s a smart guy though. I wonder what problems he’s seen that lead him to believe that there can be too much RAM.

Would be interesting, because this would be totally against anything I know about RAM. I think get as much as you can get and the machine runs better.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the input. I’m running FCP 5.1.4 and the drive is about half full.

The sequence isn’t rendered, it has an orange bar above it. I thought if you were running a powerful machine RT Extreme could play stuff back without the need to render? I’m very new to FCP so may have misunderstood.

    hi,

rendering speed or speed in terms of realtime editing means using raid systems. This has nothing to do with ram or cpu speed.
So if you have no fast raid, you have to render.
