NYC is a large market with rates up and down the board. An experienced editor generally gets between $50 and $80 dollars an hours with OT after 10. That being said there is a lot of editing and a lot of editors out there and good people are working for $35 and $40 dollars an hour to feed there families.
For a spec spot and a young editor I would stay on the $35 to $40 using there system and $50 to $70 with your system. Also talk with the producer and come up with a rate you are both comfortable with.
DON’T give away the house! You may eventually need a place to stay!
Good Luck

Hi All Thanks for the responses. I am using a dv camera via firewire into a g-raid. Final Cut pro is running on brand new IMAC I-7. . It is not the camera that captured the tapes originally. I cleaned the heads on my camera. The tapes are a transfer from 8mm film, but could have been a screen shot. could be an SP-LP thing. Is there anyway I can tell?
Picture in getting digital lines on the left and right sides. Looks like interlacing of the fields.
Thanks again!

Thanks Steve!
Good choice worked perfect and the DVD looks great. Better than I thought considering it was a rip from DVD.
Thanks again

Depends on your situation and your location. I am a union editor in NYC at a network. I made more cash editing in the Post House world but had very few benefits. With OT, I make close to what I was making cashwise, but close to double with the real value of the benefits. A major concern these days. As a freelancer if you need the card to work on the type of gigs you want then you need a card, if not why get it. You will not get work by just having a card! That being said, having a card does not limit you to doing just union work, you can get any gig you want.
Best of luck!

November 5, 2009 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Studying for the business – looking for helpful adviceHow do you get a start in this business? Is that your question! I have been in it for 22 years and still ask!!!
This business is as broad as your question. The bottom line is the more experience you have visually telling stories the better. It does not matter if it is a wedding, corporate video or broadcast TV. Find out who is doing the type of work you want to do, and offer to help them (for free for a while if needed). Learn then earn. Once you have a better base of experience you will be able to find good paying work.
I hope this helps

That being said if you already have the footage and don’t speed up. take 1 frame every 20 seconds or so, you just have to do the math.

It’s the talent not the technology!!! One of the best editing jobs I have ever seen was done by a kid using 2 vhs machines and an rm-440. He was entering some MTV contest created one of the most fasinating pieces of work I have ever see. Anyone can run software few can truly edit.
