A client of mine once told me that the only way he buys is if you convince him he can’t do without it. Sounds simple enough, but can a small business do without video?

October 25, 2011 at 12:52 pm in reply to: Video Production Company Business Plan + Tips, Guidance and IdeasI feel like a business plan (more importantly a marketing plan) is a very good idea). Anytime time you spend writing down the mission of your business and mapping out how you are going to get there, it is not a bad thing. It can be quite simple, but very valuable to guiding your future decisions.
Simply decide what and where you want your business to be. Then map out a logical plan to get there. As you go down that journey the real questions will come. Use and free template you can find, research a little. Find Companies that are successful and try to see what they are doing. Each of us is different and have different approaches to business. Our individual plan will not work for you, because your skills and business will be different.
Good luck on your journey.

Our careers can be summed up by a book called “Who Moved My Cheese”. Simply put, the Post Production (and production) business has changed. Wether it has changed for the good or bad is entirely how you look at it, and adjust to it.
Gone are the days of the huge Post Houses and the huge editor salaries of the 80’s and early 90’s. Most projects can be done on a lap top, and management expectations are not as high as they used to be.
On the flip side. Cost of entry is fairly low, and more video production is being done then ever before. 10 years ago, I could do no work at all from my house, now I shoot HD, Edit, and create graphics packages there for clients all the time.
No doubt Someone Moved our Cheese, It is our mission to find the new deli!

I have the Camera in M set levels the way I want, but when tilting up from the darker bottom of the vase to the top brighter it seems like the “iris” is opening or the picture is getting brighter. I expected that in auto, but not in manual

Editing is a real world craft. It is an art. A natural feel. anybody can edit, but not anyone can be a true editor. Studying editing and composition can be done by watching great movies and music videos closely, but you really have to see it naturally.
If you want a degree to help you in this industry get a marketing degree!!! Editing has been a very rewarding career for me, but the industry has chained dramatically since I started. It has become more about the business then the art.
Study great films and TV, watch music videos, go to editor forums, but study business.
And most of all, always remember to enjoy the ride.
