I have now discovered the answer to this problem, but not before (fruitlessly) purchasing a new DVD burner, and ripping out most of my remaining hair!

Within Sony DVD Architect Studio 4.5 there is a preference “Enable Windows XP Theme support”, and the program default is to tick this. When running under Windows 7 this should be unticked, and the DVD-R problems disappear.

Yes, you are correct that the second problem did not directly involve Sony Vegas (or DVD Architect). The disc image input to the programme related to a file that had been produced in DVD Architect, however, so if there was a shortcoming in this, then it could presumably be passed on to the disc image.

I must emphasise that I have successfully burned DVD-R files on the unit (employing ULEAD Movie Factory). This is what makes me think the problem is probably software, rather than hardware, based.

The only time I had a problem like that was when I used to stick labels on the discs!
