  • Problem burning to DVD-R discs

I am a new user of Sony Vegas Platinum (Version 9.0b, Build 92) and have hit an unexpected problem, in that burning to DVD+R (and +R RW) discs works fine, but any attempt to write to DVD-R results in the system “hanging up”.

What happens is that everything seems to go as planned until the burning process reaches the “Burning Lead In” stage, and then the “Time to completion” rockets up (ultimately showing a figure of hours!) if I don’t interrupt it. My DVD burner indicator light flashes to show it is burning data, and some data is written to the disc, but not in an intelligible form. The process continues ad infinitum until it is manually discontinued. I have tried burning the DVD-R at below maximum speed, but this did not help, and have unsuccessfully tried DVD-Rs from several manufacturers.

I’m running on a fairly new, Windows 7 based PC, and have not experienced any other problems of this nature. The disc burner is a Samsung SH-S223B SB02, and I do not think that I am missing any vendor’s firmware updates. Moreover, I know that the burner is capable of writing DVD-R discs, since on several occasions I have successfully written them from disc image files, using other software. The vendors of the PC were helpful, but said that this was not a problem they had met before, and could not suggest a solution.

One possible “work around” solution that I tried was to write a disc image file (using Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.5) of one of my successfully Vegas-produced +R DVDs, and then create a DVD-R from this disc image. Unfortunately this failed when the the program hung up when creating the DVD-R disc!

I would be very grateful for any constructive advice.

I assume that this test had nothing to do with DVD Architect since it sounds like you were using Ulead DVD Movie Factory. This suggests that something might not be right with the drive since two software packages are having problems with it when using DVD-R discs.

Yes, you are correct that the second problem did not directly involve Sony Vegas (or DVD Architect). The disc image input to the programme related to a file that had been produced in DVD Architect, however, so if there was a shortcoming in this, then it could presumably be passed on to the disc image.

I must emphasise that I have successfully burned DVD-R files on the unit (employing ULEAD Movie Factory). This is what makes me think the problem is probably software, rather than hardware, based.

I have now discovered the answer to this problem, but not before (fruitlessly) purchasing a new DVD burner, and ripping out most of my remaining hair!

Within Sony DVD Architect Studio 4.5 there is a preference “Enable Windows XP Theme support”, and the program default is to tick this. When running under Windows 7 this should be unticked, and the DVD-R problems disappear.

Wow, that’s good to know. Thanks for reporting back with the solution.
