It’s always sad to hear of someone shooting film and not making HD transfers… I’m sure of course that finances were a reason.
Anyway, given that you have captured the footage at DV, the best quality master you can making is DVCam. You will gain no quality benefit going to a better format. You will not lose quality if you had the DVCam dubbed to Digibeta (digital process) but you will lose a barely noticeable amount going to BetaSP (analogue process).

And unless you shoot with a good camera in a well lit scene, adding grain to what will most likely be grainy DV isn’t going to turn out as desired.

October 23, 2008 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Freelancing, Confirmed Bookings, Holds, and Cancellation FeesThere was a discussion of a similar nature a few weeks ago and one thing I noticed was the wide variety of responses with most people ending with the “someone is going to get screwed here, you and the producer or just you.”
Where I work we also use the hold / challenge / bought system and expect if time is bought it is paid for even when a job is cancelled. We can implement that against big companies like HBO, USA, ESPN etc but not smaller companies.
In your case the safer option for you is to probably get screwed, chin up and get on with finding more work.

Well it’s really a subjective thing.
If Apple cleans up the workflow, file management, consistent interface and stability issues, I will really want Color in my workflow.
At the moment, I can get away with using FCP color correction, but if the process was quicker and easier then bring on Color. The potential to have Color working in the suite effeciently is quite lucrative. At the middle to top end of the market it will compete well with Avid Symphony (which given that its cc is inbuilt, means it is killing color).
It is even viable at the bottom. At the beginning of next year i will be making a Doc with a $5,000 to $20,000 budget. Color will greatly benefit me. As I believe Walter will confirm, even in its current state, Color is a far superior CC tool if you have the time to use it.

He’s asking you to act like a wholesaler. When you buy from a wholesaler, you then mark up the cost of the product before selling to the consumer. Are you a wholesaler of video services?
I do know of some large setups that have the flexibility to have an Industry rate then consumer rate. But know this… these companies make a profit of industry rate and a further profit of a consumer rate.
Do not cut your rate if you cannot afford to just so he can add his 20%. This is why some people talk about cutting out the middle man. So he looks good he expects you to make less.

I love rumors like this. FCP is growing it’s market share. It is a successful product and a good package. CS3 wasn’t anywhere near as good as FCP Studio 2. I do not know about CS4, but FCP Studio 2 has some more tried and tested tools so I doubt a relatively new package is going to be superior.
Also, Apple just purchased Color.
So the logic (presuming Apple has not forgotten how a business works) would be that if you have a successful product that you are still expanding, you would not suddenly ditch it through fear of an unproven product.
So why are people making such nonsensical rumors??
Here’s one, Apple is about to re-release “The Lisa” with an iSight being the only new improvement…

That blows. I could leave New York and move back to Sydney, which is still more than LA.
One advantage for yourself though is that New York would be a cheaper flight home.

Man,
Stuff like this is a pain in the bum. If you worked online the whole time you’d be laughing, but I know that is not always viable.
1. In Video Output, you can cross-convert 720 to 1080. I normally work in 59.94 so I cannot 100% guarantee it works for other frame rates though I don’t see why it wouldn’t.
2. That does sound like a cadence issue. In the Film setting chance the “phase” to A, but put it back when done.
3. This frame rate stuff just kills. Someone else can go through all your options, but budget permitting I recommend this. Dub ALL footage to the one HD tape format with a 23.98 frame rate. Your offline/online will then be easy. The problem you are going to encounter is due to TC pulldown, your Avid TC’s and Source TC’s won’t match. Maybe make all your footage DVCPro HD.
Anyway just my 2 cents.

Hah, this is so funny.
Yes there is a difference between Typo and Misspelled. And either way the editor had to fix it.
The response is all about ego. And he’s a tad too sensitive and took it to heart. Is he commonly this defensive? Defensive editor’s can be tough to work with because they can be closed to any criticism.
Either way, funny topic.

AE can export any format in any Codec on your system. or just revert to Animation. If it cannot, you either do not have the Codec on your system or you are using a very old version of AE.
You can track the blemish cover up to the pimple and it should hold for multiple frames.
My best advice would be to ask in the After Effects forum. lots of great advice there.
