    Hey guys,

    I work for a documentary film company that has been delivering in 1080i for a few years now, and recently one of our clients changed their delivery specs to 1080p 23.976fps. This is something very unfamiliar to us so we’re running into several issues.

    For starters, I was told we could cut a 720p sequence at 23.976 and uprez it at the end of the project to 1080p 23.976. We were looking into the AJA FS1 for this conversion, however recently I was told by a Rep that we could do this uprezzing in the AVID, however it would not occur in real time like it would with the FS1. Can anyone tell me more about this process. We are editing using an AVID Media Composer v3.0

    When working in the 720p / 23.976 project, I’ve been running tests on many flavors of video to see what conflictions we may run into. here are a few problems:

    When capturing from MiniDV tape via SD at 23.976 (even though the media originated at 29.97) I was able to get a clean looking clip. I did this at DV50 resolution. I immediately captured a second clip from the same tape but at a different time code and it was very jittery. This was done at DV25. At first I thought it may have been a codec issue. To test I went back and digitized two identical clips, one at DV25 and another at DV50 and they looked perfect. I read a few minutes ago that the cadence may have been messed up and that when working in 23.976 its best to start your clips on either a 0 or a 5. Is this true?

    THIS IS MY BIGGEST ISSUE

    Most of our original footage has been shot on a Vericam at 720p 23.976. I am able to capture it fine via HD-SDI in 720p/23.976 mode. Unfortunately we do not have the available hard drive space to capture the whole project at this resolution. I wanted to therefore capture the media in standard def and then replace it with the high definition footage during the online. I changed the format tab in the project to reflect 23.976 and I brought in the media over SDI. Everything looked fine. I then decomposed the sequence and went to do an “online test” by replacing the media with its high definition equivalent. I changed the format tab back into 720p / 23.976 mode and tried to batch capture the media, but AVID would not allow me to capture. I’m at a loss. Any ideas?

    Now 1080i media also seems to be a problem. If I switch the format tab into 23.976 mode I can capture the footage, however, it no longer seems to be in HD. Now I can transcode the media back to HD using the DNxHD 90X codec, but I was curious if there were any other options to handle this media in a 720p project?

    Lastly, has anyone used the Phantom camera, and if so, can you give me any advise for bringing it into a 720p project?

    Man,

    Stuff like this is a pain in the bum. If you worked online the whole time you’d be laughing, but I know that is not always viable.

    1. In Video Output, you can cross-convert 720 to 1080. I normally work in 59.94 so I cannot 100% guarantee it works for other frame rates though I don’t see why it wouldn’t.

    2. That does sound like a cadence issue. In the Film setting chance the “phase” to A, but put it back when done.

    3. This frame rate stuff just kills. Someone else can go through all your options, but budget permitting I recommend this. Dub ALL footage to the one HD tape format with a 23.98 frame rate. Your offline/online will then be easy. The problem you are going to encounter is due to TC pulldown, your Avid TC’s and Source TC’s won’t match. Maybe make all your footage DVCPro HD.

    Anyway just my 2 cents.
