Just curious…not to start a new thread, but, Walter, how are you running the Caldigit? JBOD, Performance, or Protected?
My real question is: Is there any protection in Performance mode?

    Caldigit needs a forum here!

Great product, I’m running two of them now. Any thoughts or plans to review the FirewireVR? Recently moved to P2 and I’m looking for archive solutions.

    Thanks

    You have to format it.
You can delete clips if the P2 card is inside of the camera.

I was bored and curious… I was correct.

Take your 1080i footage or sequence, Nest it in a 4:3 sequence, and render to the iPod export setting. In QT there are no options other than iPod, so its straight-forward. The footage will be letterboxed in the frame.
It worked for me with some HDCAM footage I had on my drives. Should be no different with DVCPRO HD.

    Enjoy.

Here’s a stab in the dark?
Try nesting the 1080i sequence in a 4:3 sequence and output that to iPod codec via compressor (or whatever).

Get a CalDigit! I just added another unit to replace a Huge and 2 Medeas.
If you go to their website, they now have a rackmount unit — HD444. I believe it replaced their Pro unit.

So far so good. Looking forward to the FirewireVR units. The hot-swap hard drives would be a nice addition for both editing and archiving…especially since moving to P2 technology. The fact that I can store hard drives on a shelf, and mount them when needed, is intriguing. CalDigit is definitely making moves.

Just installed an IO for an new LH setup. Like my IO/LA unit, I haven’t heard a “peep” out of it.
Both used to route analog in and out of LH and other equipment.

WOW…well thats disappointing. Are you referring to P2 to P2 Store, or P2 Store to Computer.
I’m sure the transfer is slow using USB, but it would suck if its just as slow for P2 to P2 Store.

Let me know. According to Panasonic, 4 GB cards are under 4 minutes, which means 8GB’s should be around 7-8 minutes, no?

    Thanks

    Thanks Uli.
Seems like anything coming out of the camera is sssslllloooowwww.

The best testing for me so far after 2 days of playing around is just putting the P2 in my G4 laptop. 7GB’s transfered in about 5 or 6 minutes. But again, who wants to tote around a laptop to every shoot.

Thanks for the info on the Firestore. B&H is still “Accepting Orders” but after reading 4 months worth of posts on this forum, I am starting to lean towards the P2 store. I bought 3 high capacity batteries for the HVX and seeing that the battery life is EXCELLENT, I can definitely spare one for a P2 Store. There appears to be extra significant cost with Firestore to get extra batts and chargers. The firewire cable and shaking also concerns me as I do a lot of run-and-gun shooting. And the preception that its not “ready for primetime” is a concern as my work is broadcast related.

    Thanks again

    Thanks Shane….I’ll check it out!

As for the FS-100….I thought this was a new product??? I guess not. B&H here in NYC is taking orders, but claims its not available yet (maybe for them). Are you referring to the HD100?? I’ll take your word for it….like I said, this is new territory for me….but my understanding was this unit (FS100) was uptimized for the HVX200. Are there different “flavors” of the FS100, or must you buy the one compatible with your camera (Sony, JVC, Panny, etc…)?

[Shane Ross] “You can, however, use USB or iPods to back up footage from your P2 card or Firestore. Odd use for an iPod, though.”

Yeah, just curious. Definitely referring to it for backup in the field. Since it has a HD mode, I thought that might be an interesting use…and VERY inexpensive if it works.

I did some testing here with a spare LaCie, and the transfer of 7GB’s took forever–so I’ll check out your tutorial.

    Thanks again.
    Ron
