I finally picked up a HVX200 and started doing some testing before using it on a job, One Word: WOW.

This is definitely a workflow improver, but figuring out that workflow will take longer than I thought.
    One question for the group:
Outside of the P2 Store and Firestore units, what else are you using to backup in the field?
Right now I have 1 8GB card and waiting for the Panasonic rebate to arrive (another 8GB card).
I have some spare LaCie drives that I thought about using, but are there any battery powered firewire drives that anyone knows about? (considering Host mode backup method). I have a G4 laptop, but that won’t always work in run and gun situations.

Outside of this, I AM considering the FS-100 when its available. Anyone have this, or testing this unit?

Would be NICE to get this into a 80GB iPod, huh????!!!?!?!? Anyone try this via USB?

Look forward to picking your brains– thanks in advance for any advice.

Here is my workflow, that I laid out in a tutorial:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=8&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow/index.html

We back up to portable firewire drives in the field.

[ronnyron] ” I AM considering the FS-100 when its available. Anyone have this, or testing this unit?”

It has been available for QUITE some time, and many people are using it. Search this forum for FS-100 and read. The major drawback with these units is that they do not record any of the NATIVE formats, like 720p 24PN. But many people have had great success with them.

Not just any hard drive will work. You need one specifically designed to capture footage from this camera. You can, however, use USB or iPods to back up footage from your P2 card or Firestore. Odd use for an iPod, though.

    Thanks Shane….I’ll check it out!

As for the FS-100….I thought this was a new product??? I guess not. B&H here in NYC is taking orders, but claims its not available yet (maybe for them). Are you referring to the HD100?? I’ll take your word for it….like I said, this is new territory for me….but my understanding was this unit (FS100) was uptimized for the HVX200. Are there different “flavors” of the FS100, or must you buy the one compatible with your camera (Sony, JVC, Panny, etc…)?

[Shane Ross] “You can, however, use USB or iPods to back up footage from your P2 card or Firestore. Odd use for an iPod, though.”

Yeah, just curious. Definitely referring to it for backup in the field. Since it has a HD mode, I thought that might be an interesting use…and VERY inexpensive if it works.

I did some testing here with a spare LaCie, and the transfer of 7GB’s took forever–so I’ll check out your tutorial.

    Thanks again.

The FireStore is in high demand (guess why), we had to wait for ours quite a few weeks. But it works very well for us, even if we had a bad charger at first delivery (the replacement came quickly). They claim to have a solution for 24pn via firmware update soon (stripping the extra frames in the device).

Out of curiosity I tried copying in host mode to an iPod, but it was awfully slow plus you have to reformat it to an older PC format. After that experience I installed my music again and decided it’s not worth the hassle.

    Thanks Uli.
Seems like anything coming out of the camera is sssslllloooowwww.

The best testing for me so far after 2 days of playing around is just putting the P2 in my G4 laptop. 7GB’s transfered in about 5 or 6 minutes. But again, who wants to tote around a laptop to every shoot.

Thanks for the info on the Firestore. B&H is still “Accepting Orders” but after reading 4 months worth of posts on this forum, I am starting to lean towards the P2 store. I bought 3 high capacity batteries for the HVX and seeing that the battery life is EXCELLENT, I can definitely spare one for a P2 Store. There appears to be extra significant cost with Firestore to get extra batts and chargers. The firewire cable and shaking also concerns me as I do a lot of run-and-gun shooting. And the preception that its not “ready for primetime” is a concern as my work is broadcast related.

    Thanks again

You will be disappointed with the transfer times from the P2-Store too, I’m afraid. It’s terribly slow.

WOW…well thats disappointing. Are you referring to P2 to P2 Store, or P2 Store to Computer.
I’m sure the transfer is slow using USB, but it would suck if its just as slow for P2 to P2 Store.

Let me know. According to Panasonic, 4 GB cards are under 4 minutes, which means 8GB’s should be around 7-8 minutes, no?

    Thanks

[ronnyron] “Are you referring to P2 to P2 Store, or P2 Store to Computer.”

I am guessing that it between P2 Store and computer, because downloading the P2 cards to the P2 Store is pretty darn fast. P2 Store to computer has 60GB to transfer (if it is full) so yes, it will take a while. No longer than any other hard drive to hard drive transfer, in my experience.

[ronnyron] “I’m sure the transfer is slow using USB”

Not at all. Rather fast actually. This isn’t USB 1.0, but USB 2.0, which is plenty fast. And because the P2 store uses the USB port, and you connect a drive to the firewire port, you aren’t on the same bus, so transfers are rather fast. If they both were on the same firewire bus, then it would be considerable slower.

[ronnyron] “4 GB cards are under 4 minutes, which means 8GB’s should be around 7-8 minutes, no?”

A Gig a minute has been my experience…

It’s slow during transfer to the computer. I’m talking about a Mac, since I like the excellent support of MXF in Final Cut Pro 5.2.1, but the Mac is notorious for the bad USB support. Here are a few values from my dear collegue Bjoern Adamski:
