Walter, is ref. movie export still done by simply exporting an FCP movie and unchecking the ‘make movie self-contained’ button? If so, doesn’t this method render any effects beforehand?

What I’m getting at is…does it still hold true that exporting to MPEG-2 directly from an unrendered FCP timeline (via Compressor) result in better quality fx and colour correcting b/c it bypasses an extra level of DV25 compression?

[Tom Adams] “thank you for presenting more real-world examples”

The “real world” is full of crap. Why would you want to settle for that?

And, on your other point, I wouldn’t even use mp3’s for offlining.

I really don’t see why this is such an issue and why we’re wasting so much space on this…

    USE iMOVIE!!! Problem solved.

Or, if you insist on trying to bend a pro app to YOUR expectations…create a droplet in Compresser and get back to work.

[ben] “by the way, most people that i have encountered, can’t tell the difference between aiff audio, or an mp3.”

You’re hanging with the wrong crowd. ;O)

Maybe I just personally have higher standards, but I would NEVER use mp3’s in a timeline, even in an offline situation. Why add that extra media management? Is it really that hard to drag and drop a bunch of files to convert them, if you really insist on using mp3’s as source files?

Standards are really falling these days. It’s sad. Anyone who can’t tell the difference between an mp3 and ‘uncompressed’ audio should just stick to cutting video only. That’s just my opinion, though.

We need higher standards! Newbies and podcast culture are really taking quality into the toilet. Fast.

  • Just avoid the Porsche models and stick with the d2. I’ve had problems with the Porsche models. They get hot hot hot! The d2’s run cool and are much more durable.

It sounds like you want to at least separate the blown areas, as opposed to trying to magically restore detail that’s not there.

So what I’d do is add a matte to the sky portion and darken and/or tint that area only and do regular correction to the rest of the image. Try to make it look like that blown out forehead was for aesthetic effect (maybe a very subtle glow).

Just an idea…I’ve seen mattes do wonderful things in very flat overexposed images, though.

Wow, my clients would rather me be on a “high horse” than waste their money using mp3 files in their show. Yikes.

I don’t care what anyone says, I trust my own ears, and my own ears tell me MP3 sucks, plain and simple. If anything, use Apple’s AAC. It sounds better.

Who cares if anyone uses mp3 anyway (I certainly don’t care), just stop whining that a pro app doesn’t support it. I’d much rather Apple concentrate on the important features than making sure a crappy sounding consumer format is supported.

Either way you go, it sure ain’t hard to convert your file(s), is it? Create a droplet and keep working…

  • Just make sure you stick with the d2 drives. The Porsche ones feel REALLY cheap and they heat up immensely. The d2 drives stay cool and look more attractive anyway.

    [ben] “but dude”

But DUDE, make a droplet, drag and drop. Couldn’t be simpler, DUDE.

But dude, seriously, why would you ever want to use mp3’s (especially on a regular basis) in anything you’re cutting with FCP? Why not go to the source?

This question has always baffled me on FCP forums.

FWIW, mp3 sounds terrible for the most part, despite what any “experts” tell you. Either that, or I’ve got ears of gold. Because I can tell the difference. If you want to compress, at least use Apple’s AAC. It’s noticeable better.

I have yet to be in any pro situation where mp3’s are involved at any level, except maybe an offline quickie.

Do you recommend the Zdisk brand? Are you satisfied with it? If you think it would work well for me, could you post the model number? I’d much appreciate it.”
