You certainly make an important point, Shane. But I’m using stuff shot by a highly experienced DP with many years experience, beginning in film, with several awards on his shelf. The 5D is just one of many cameras he uses.
Also, we’ve shot 5D and GH1 cameras side-by-side on the same set and gotten these results.

Oh, you’re just working with files that someone took off the memory card and sent to you. Yes, if they weren’t properly saved then, yes, you probably have to make use of the applications mentioned above to make them usable.
But if you have the original memory card with the data in-hand you don’t need the camera. If you have it, plug it into your computer with an adapter and Log & Transfer directly from the card with the Canon PlugIn.
In the future, if someone is just going to give you files from the card, tell them to send you a disk image of the disk, rather than copying the files. It’s very quick procedure to use FCP on a Mac laptop, along with the Canon plugin, to make a disk image.

When you say that you tried using the “Canon codecs”, do you mean that you used the Canon PlugIn for FCP, which allows you to log & transfer as ProRes? That has worked well for me. I’ve used it for footage from the Canon 5D and the Panasonic Lumix GH1. If that is, in fact, what you’ve tried without success, I’d propose investigating further why the PlugIn didn’t work. It really is the fastest, easiest way to deal with that material.

Luis, you are in luck:
Just this past week Canon released a plugin for FCP that allows you to use Log & Transfer to bring the 5D footage in as ProRes. I’ve tried it and it works like a charm. No need any more to go through Compressor. And it’s faster than Compressor.

What’s also VERY cool is that this plugin allows you to use FCP log & transfer to make a disk image clone of your memory card, allowing you to back up your data in the field. The disk image can be used for log & transfer, if you like, when you get back to the studio.

Thanks to both Shane and Michael for taking the time to suggest answers. It turns out that I was so concentrated on the video that I didn’t look closely enough at the render line. Duh! It was, in fact, the audio (which I don’t even need)that was the problem. Easy to fix. Thanks for pointing out the possibilities that led me to the answer.

Well, Shane, maybe you read my post too quickly. I wrote that I did, in fact, consider the DSLR forum — and I might still go there — but my specific issue is how FCP is handling these files. And anyway, this is a busier forum with more participants. I also wrote that I am, in fact, letting the FCP sequence re-set according to the clip settings.
Do you have any actual information for me, Shane, or do you just not like my question for some reason?
For anyone else out there with real experience and suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you.
