no, they don’t interact, but you can use them together, make one affect another in different ways, etc.
I haven’t experimented with what you describe, but afaik, they don’t work that way.

look at the graphs for your keyframes… I’ve had similar problems in the past, but can’t remember exactly what to change. Make sure you look at graphs for all your properties.
If you think it’s bad in After Effects, try Poser… I just about wanna pull my hair out with it’s keyframe interpolation weirdness.

why not move the center of the mask to where you want to start it?

Look into Trapcode Form and Particular.
There are some great swirly ethereal effects you can get out of those, and with Form, you can use a layer as an opacity and color layer for the particles in Form, so you can have them coalesce into a shape over time, or disperse into nothingness.
If you go to http://www.trapcode.com and look at the Form examples, you’ll see what I mean. I have the project file for the disintegrating text, and with that file you can see how to use luma maps to drive dispersion of the particles.

are you using a crossover cable to connect them, or are you using a router?

He said it’s a G4 Powerbook. It woudn’t be that difficult, and I sure as hell wouldn’t pay someone else to do it, unless I was under warranty anyway, and I wouldn’t have to pay then…
Go to http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/ and check out the step by step instructions (with pictures). If you still feel you can’t do it, then pay someone.
I just read the instructions for my G4 Powerbook (Al 15 inch 1.5GHz) and other than keeping the screws in the right places for reassembly, it looks pretty simple. Just make sure you have the right tools… they even tell you which ones to get and you can buy them from that site.
(#0 Phillips screwdriver and a T6 Torx screwdriver, and if possible, a 1.5mm hex wrench in my case…)

um… get more video cards? Rubberband them together?
I’m pretty sure it’s a hardware limitation… as a test, can you make the layer the same width, but not as high and see more of the layer?
Why, exactly, does your solid need to be 30000 pixels wide? I’m not saying it doesn’t need to be, but maybe there is a solution that would allow you to use something more realistically manageable.

Yeah, I have CS3 Master Collection, which is everything from production premium plus Indesign and a couple other things that I opted out of installing.
This machine can’t run Premier Pro and one or two other apps (I think the sound apps) because of lacking hardware, but After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Bridge, Acrobat and whatever else (I think that’s it…) are all installed and working fine, if a bit slower than I’d really like them to be, but it’s a G4 Powerbook so I’m not expecting it to be blazing fast.
I think you need to contact Adobe. Something is way wrong if you can’t install it on that machine.

Why not use a radial gradient and do Effect>Transition>Gradient Wipe and soften the wipe, so that the center fades in before the outer edges. Much easier than manipulating a mask and if you do a ramp on a solid and precomp that, you can manipulate where the start of the effect happens.
I know it’s not a “fade” but a gradient wipe with soft edges is basically a fade.

I installed it on a G4 Powerbook with a max resolution of 1280×854. I don’t see how your iMac would be less capable than this machine.
What is your highest resolution setting?
