Blu-ray? I don’t know if you have been noticing, Neil, but Blu-ray’s sales numbers are really just slightly above pathetic. Why? The new “Divergence” issue of Creative COW Magazine (that is at the printer now and will shortly be released), tells many parts of the story.
A large and growing part of the market has moved WAY BEYOND optical disc-based formats and broadcasters are finding that the future is not going to be Blu-ray or any other high-priced format that tries to sell the same old titles in a new edition for another $24.95 or more.
The Divergence Issue looks at many new means of both distribution and the devices that handle them, and Blu-ray is hardly a mention.
My bet is that in another couple of years, Blu-ray will enjoy even smaller sales numbers than it is today.
As some here have mentioned, their customers are not even asking for discs anymore.
You are right, Neil: it IS 2010 and things have changed and that change is accelerating — unfortunately, not in the direction of any optical disc-based format.

No, to be honest, we have an ever-growing contingent of professional broadcast engineers who tell us that the old name made it foreign to them. In the interest of trying to get more involvement from the large body of professional broadcast engineers, IT people, and many others who work within the confines of networks, cable services, etc., we wanted a name that did not put them off. Many told us that they scratched their heads wondering what the old term meant.

Gen-Y isn’t the first to be able to graduate from college without needing to hold down a real job along the way.”
In my experience, Ian, this seemed to happen with the “but that will hurt their self-esteem, so give them all a trophy and don’t keep score” generation raised under psychological insanity of the 1970s and on — at least here in America where political correctness added itself to the original crazy idea and took it into absolute insanity.
But that is my opinion, and I (for one) do not believe that it’s going to get better for them in the days ahead, as the Entitlement Generation is going to have to compete on a world-interconnected stage against the cream of the crop of India, China, Singapore, Malaysia, and a myriad of other countries fighting for their place in the world and who are driven and don’t believe the world owes them a living. So, they’ll take it. I look at most of the Gen Y’ers I know, and that thought scares me.
I just do not believe for a second that teaching kids to play T-ball and hand ’em all a trophy “because there are no winners or losers, you are all winners” did anything to make the Entitlement Generation ready for the real world. No generation was ever so shielded from reality and fed so much of its own “Kool-Aid of self importance” to drink.
Thankfully, there are a handful of exceptions.
That’s my opinion.

Because they think they are doing right by people and they want to be nice. Eventually they find out that the old adage, “Give people an inch and they’ll take a mile” is an old axiom because some wise old grizzled person figured something out about human nature.
Like Sisyphus, eventually they collapse under the weight.

We have a leader that did this years ago when the COW was in its infancy and one day we wrote and asked him why he was no longer visiting the COW when he had been so involved at one point.
His answer?
“I am still involved, in fact I have about two thousand phone calls over the last year. People call me all the time.”
He no longer hosts here because the people found out he was willing to take calls and so they hounded him to death.
He still gets calls and even though he has culled back on things, there are still people that won’t leave him alone.
It has affected his business.

There are always tons of suggestions, Dave — both on the forums and here in the COWmunications center — but unfortunately, many revolve around trying to change human nature and that is the tough part.
We used to try FAQs but when we saw how much work went into them and how few people actually used them (even the newest users), it became pretty futile to try to go that route.
Hopefully, the newest addition from Abraham will help but I have learned to be a little skeptical over the years. Hopefully as we continue to refine the interface and implement the big changes that we have been and are continuing to work on — which will appear later — people will find Abraham’s new feature useful. Hopefully, they will use it and point newer users to it.
We’ll see.
Me? I think most people will continue to run in oblivious of anyone or anything else and blurt out the same questions that are often no more than a few threads down the forum.
I have been working with Abraham to engineer a totally new way of looking at forums and online support, one that will hopefully address this successfully.
But again, we’ll see.

While I get your point, a bit of hyperbole is at work here, I fear. Both the FCP and AE forums went live on the same day.
The reason the FCP forum got it was that the leaders demanded it. We never received the same request from the forum leaders in the AE forum.

Mark and Mike have stated the most serious defect in their request and I will overstate the obvious by adding that without a definition of what they REALLY and ACTUALLY want from you, you will be locked into a situation wherein you will likely be moving your equipment, etc., to another town to work for $20 an hour or less. (That is what nearly always happens in these instances.)
Also, in nearly every case of this kind of thing that I have seen over the years, the one in your role comes out of it as the one that takes the blame for everything that was not clearly delineated and planned for, with no one wanting to take responsibility — so, the one at the bottom of the totem pole learns the old adage that “Dog doo rolls down hill.”
Avoid human nature at all costs: get it in writing.
