For me, it is not a matter of fear. It is a matter of respect.
People who do not understand that this site survives and continues to offer free services because of the banners here, likely do not give much thought to the work that goes into this site.
So from my point of view, I understand the people who use blockers that log-in from nations around the world with smaller bandwidth connections. What I’ve never understood are the people who log-in with high bandwidth pipes and block the ads. To me, that is the same as saying that the COW should just close its doors and go away.
Your opinion may differ and that is fine, I am only offering mine.

[Peter Berg] “Have you had experience with Avid support Ronald? If Avid did not exist I guess I would not have it to compare to, but fortunately I have dealt with Avid support. “
Yes, I owned an Avid for a number of years and would agree with you that their customer technical support is the best in the business. (IMHO) But there is another darker side to Avid, as well. That is found in the same customers who love Avid’s customer technical support team, tend to give much lower marks for updates, new features, price-to-performance ratios (though this changed in the last year, didn’t it?), etc.
No company is perfect, it doesn’t happen.
I’ll keep my response brief: da Vinci charged big monies for their support and found it didn’t work. Blackmagic has added many things, dropped the price and ended the premium support program. That is the reality of the market. I could wish for something else but that is just what it is: speculation and wishing — something that does indeed have its place here at the COW. So please feel free to speculate and ruminate.

[Peter Berg] “The phone support is not bad, but a few times I was not able to get an answer to my question or help for my problem (They told me they didn’t know much about that part of the software and I should try to Post on the COW to see if someone could help me. Wow, really???). I am a paying customer, and I expect more from the support department.”
If I had a dollar for every time that Apple tech support or Adobe tech support tells people on the phone to “try the COW, they can probably give you the answer,” I’d have a lot of money in the bank. Over the years, we have been told countless times that Apple, Adobe and other major manufacturers send their customers here. I even once called Apple with an issue to see how they’d handle it and they sent me here. I chuckled…
There is NO WAY that a tech support person could have the knowledge that is found in an aggregate body of users whose experience levels far exceed any single tech person that I have ever met.
No offense but when you find the bottle you can rub for the magic genie to give you the answer every time, please let me know as I will either hook them up to the COW or auction them off to the highest bidder — and trust me, I’ll get a lot of money from the major manufacturers for someone like that.
Lastly, da Vinci tried the high-cost tech support model and it didn’t work. Every manufacturer I know who did it that way either has changed or is in trouble and likely should change.
Those are my thoughts on the matter.

April 27, 2012 at 6:03 pm in reply to: DaVinci LITE Users; Please ask your questions in the DaVinci LITE forum[Dmitry Kitsov] “This would perhaps help to avoid certain nasty elitist attitude that some of the posters have towards the NOOBs.”
There is no fixing a crappy human nature. Sorry to disappoint you but no mechanism on Earth can do that. The people who need to change have to do it and in my experience, there’s little chance of that.
I gave up looking for the magic “fix human nature” mechanism long ago.
There have to be hard and easy lines of demarcation and the more abstract a thought, the less people will understand it. A hard line for “Lite” or for the regular version is easily grasped and understood. Anything more abstract than that and things begin to fall victim to the gray.
Lastly, there are no perfect answers, someone is always going to disagree and want it some other way.

[Greg Andonian] “It seems really bizarre to me that after all the time that has passed since this story was first made public, the only thing anyone knows regarding Premiere Pro at the BBC is that the BBC bought over a thousand copies of Premiere Pro. Aside from that the only thing that’s been said about this is what they “might” be using it for. This whole thing is starting to sound like a story on Unsolved Mysteries or something.”
I find absolutely NOTHING about it odd.
Companies like the BBC make it a matter of policy to not allow their people to either directly or indirectly endorse a product. In fact I have heard of people dismissed because they violated policy in these kinds of matters.
Why?
I was on a phonecall just last week with a company trying to get them to do a story with us for the magazine and the production team were gung ho but they couldn’t get clearance from the suits to do it. The reason they were given was that they “do not wish to lose any leverage they have in negotiating for a better price in the future.”
Many of the largest companies — companies like Disney, for example — will refuse to clear projects for publication that include stories about the gear and equipment and software used. They believe that the end product is the story, not how they got there.
When I first heard the story about the BBC and Adobe Premiere Pro I didn’t think for a second that we’d get the story. We didn’t even bother trying. We have been down that road many times. Most lead to a dead end. The bigger and more storied the company, the greater chance of a dead end.
My advice: don’t hold your breath waiting for information about software used, etc., from companies like the Beeb.

[Stephen Townsend] “Like I said, great forums, just a bit clunky to navigate.”
On that point we agree, Stephen. I am sorry it’s taking longer than we wished but the last couple of years have been pretty hard on me as I have had chronic ear infections for the last 20 years and they have become almost non-stop for the last 10.
We are working on things and I am healing up and will start a new round of development shortly. Trust me, I want to see it updated probably worse than you do.

April 14, 2012 at 3:39 pm in reply to: surprised to see different posts when logged inHello Mike,
There is no issue, it is because I have worked with the team to develop a filter that allows us to feed posts to users of relatively-like levels of experience, etc.
This way, the many lazy people that will not use the search engine and ask the same question that was just asked three posts down from what they just posted, will not show to the more experienced users — instead, they will show to the users from the middle to the lower level of experience. Thus, keeping our more experienced users from being buried in the same questions over and over.
Considering that we get 2 million users a month, it leaves at least a million users a month who are “qualified” to answer any question in the COW and questions are still being answered.
Consider it a pat on the back: our mechanism has assessed your “score” and determined that you are more experienced and so it is keeping you from some of the newer user traffic.
If you do not like it, you can go into your account settings and there is a control that allows you to see newbie/all posts. By default we are filtering, you can override it.

Yes we have been working on an update. No it will not be like reduser or any of those PHPbulletinboard things which we think suck even worse than we do, so if you like those kinds of sites, use them because we never plan to go to that kind of interface. You like them, we don’t.
What we have up our sleeve is a lot different but nothing like that.
