David and Darby are spot on with their advice regarding the matte recommendation.

For another twist on things, you can also try doing things like pre-comp together the matte with a colored overlay. Then take that into your project and use the blend modes to affect the image and see what it does with various opacity settings, etc.

Sometimes, I will use both a colored overlay and a texture and then bring that in using mode settings to get various techniques.

Just a different way to think of using mattes.

As I said, I could be wrong and I hope that I am. I would hate to think that Adobe has given up this program. But I have had a couple of people tell me that they couldn’t do it and were turned down. Hopefully, we will hear from some others here chiming in with their own reports on this.

Used to is the operative term, Steve. I don’t believe that they do this anymore. A couple of friends of mine were recently turned down when trying to crossgrade their software. This policy no longer is in place if I am not mistaken.

I think he’s feeding you (Bessie says) a line of bull.

They make great margins on their RAM, so he wants to sell it. If they started voiding warranties for third-party RAM, then companies like Crucial/Micron/OWC, etc., would spearhead a class-action suit on behalf of users — and would get the users to pile on.

I have never heard nor seen any user have their warranty voided because they used third-party RAM. Hell, Apple would have a hard time in court defending that one as they themselves buy their RAM from the same companies that they’d have to block.

It is what I use in my dual-Intel Mac.

Make sure you get the certified RAM. It is more expensive but it will help you avoid those nagging sporadic RAM issues that are so hard to isolate and will drive you nuts.

Also, I do not recall Apple saying that third-party RAM voids your warranty. Where did you read that?

Hi Brendan,

At the time that that was posted, that was all that anyone knew and Adobe was stating that it didn’t work.

As most of our members here make their living with these tools, we ALWAYS tend to side with caution and feel that advising our members to look before they leap and know the facts is a good thing. We have seen far too many people upgrade in the middle of jobs, and other such things that have bitten them, to feel comfortable in not at least trying to follow the safer route.

But as you say, new information requires new comments and updates and so we will act accordingly.
