3rd party RAM vendors for MacPro
Posted by United Fan on November 10, 2007 at 2:38 pmhi all,
I’ve read that Apple highly suggests using its own RAM and that it’ll in fact void any warranty if other 3rd party RAM is used.
that being said.
has anyone purchased RAM for a Dual-core 3.0 from any 3rd party vendors? Ideally i’d love to, bec. it’s so much cheaper.
these guys have some pretty reasonable prices
anyone got any advice
hope all are well

November 10, 2007 at 2:47 pmIt is what I use in my dual-Intel Mac.
Make sure you get the certified RAM. It is more expensive but it will help you avoid those nagging sporadic RAM issues that are so hard to isolate and will drive you nuts.
Also, I do not recall Apple saying that third-party RAM voids your warranty. Where did you read that?

November 10, 2007 at 2:58 pmthanks for your response Ron,
Actually, a sales manager at my local Apple store told me.
He said “it voids the warranty, and you could just pop the RAM and bring it in, but we have ways of knowing…”
it made me shutter….

November 10, 2007 at 3:02 pmI think he’s feeding you (Bessie says) a line of bull.
They make great margins on their RAM, so he wants to sell it. If they started voiding warranties for third-party RAM, then companies like Crucial/Micron/OWC, etc., would spearhead a class-action suit on behalf of users — and would get the users to pile on.
I have never heard nor seen any user have their warranty voided because they used third-party RAM. Hell, Apple would have a hard time in court defending that one as they themselves buy their RAM from the same companies that they’d have to block.

I think this is wrong… Unless they’ve changed their policy in the last few years. That said, try this site:
It looks to be a couple of dollars cheaper than the site you linked to.

This is a good point, Apple doesn’t actually make many (if any) of the components that go into their computers. They engineer the case design and pick the components, but that’s about it. This would be similar to saying “You can’t change your graphics card, because that would void the warranty.” As Ron, err… Bessie says: load of bull =)

November 10, 2007 at 8:23 pmi’m with these guys, certified ram will be fine and apple won’t sue you…
crucial.com has a great reputation for quality they are part of micron, who, i think, still makes the ram that is shipped in macs.
otherworldcomputing.com usually has good prices for certifed ram and they test their products on macs, so you should get good ram from them.

November 11, 2007 at 2:24 amI buy my ram at Frys. Usually get Crutial. Never had a problem and the one time I used apple care they didn’t even mention that there was a 100% increase in the ram over the computer they sold me.

November 12, 2007 at 2:13 amOur Apple Business Sales rep told me something similar a few weeks ago. He didn’t explicitly say that it would void the warranty, but very similar story. I told him (sometimes too honest for my own good) that I didn’t want extra RAM in a Mac Pro I was buying because it was too pricey, we were going to get OWC RAM. He told me that it would cause problems with AppleCare, but that I could just yank the sticks before getting it serviced.
I will follow up with him tomorrow and get the straight answer.

November 12, 2007 at 2:16 amI have RAM from Other World Computing (the link you provided) in many of my Mac Pros AND my Macbook, all working just fine. They make good stuff, and the price is right. I recommend it!
About the warranty, I had a sales rep tell me a similar line, so I will confirm that tomorrow.
