October 27, 2007 at 5:35 pm in reply to: Anyone tried Encore with Leopard yet?

After the last few rounds of upgrade bumps and crashes, I am quite hesitant to be one of the early adopters when a new OS comes out.

I was going to upgrade until I remembered what happened in my last few upgrades and that cured me. :o)

Then I ran into the Adobe PDF that says there will be a patch in December and I felt much better.

Lastly, I would also add that aside from all of the direct-benefit-to-members costs like all of the free articles and video tutorials, reviews, magazines, podcasts, along with the staggering costs of maintaining the bandwidth of (according to Google Analytics) 794,207 visits made by 465,627 unique visitors a month — all of this content is here and things continue to grow and expand because there are multiple people who work on this full time.

This long ago passed the point where it was a hobby. Truth be told, it was a hobby for a long time — until it ate up all of our money supporting it; then it had to turn into a business.

But we never felt that this was a site for everyone and some people love it and some people hate it. We don’t labor under the assumption that everyone likes us or will visit this site.

But the nearly half million people that do every month include about 20% who come back over and over and do many pageviews per visit. Then there are the next 40% or so who come from time to time and make far less lengthy visits. The balance are the one-timers who come from search engines and find a link to a specific thing they need at the moment and that’s that…

In the end, Rick Nelson was right: You can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself.

[Abraham] “CLICK HERE LINKS DO NOT OPEN IN NEW WINDOW”

There was a reason that we didn’t do this. The reason had to do with the way that — as part of their security/anti-spam features — some browsers will not open links in a new window to save users from sites that force pop-unders, new windows, etc., as a means of sending spam.

    Please change it back.

    Thank you,

ICE was basically made irrelevant about six or seven years ago by the then-new computer processors. ICE was great about 10 years ago and if you had ICE’d effects plug-ins, it rocked. Today, any current plug-in will likely run circles around ICE and Kathlyn and I had ICE cards and ICE’d effects sitting around here in boxes but finally just tossed them into the trash.

As Ben says, if you are running it on a REALLY old machine it might be relevant but I would say that even five year old machines are faster than ICE cards.

Your friend basically bought a digital doorstop.

October 11, 2007 at 2:46 pm in reply to: The Hollywood Composite?

Mark Allen did an article that is very much within the scope of this question. In the article Mark explores many of the factors involved in creating the powerful look and feel of cinematic composites.

It is in the new issue of Creative COW Magazine and you can get it free by visiting the magazine at https://www.creativecowmagazine.com

I have no idea what may be happening but I suspect that it is just something in the combination of Firefox and running it under Windows 2000.

We have had no other complaints about this kind of error and so we have to conclude that that is the case.

Sorry, Lee, but we really have no suggestions.

October 10, 2007 at 8:12 pm in reply to: moderation

We have removed any moderation from the COW and the only kind that we now have in place is for the most blatant forms of profanity and the like.

As to allowing users to set filters on what threads they see or do not see, we have talked about that kind of thing and have some plans wherein members will be able to self-regulate what they see, etc., but that is a ways off.

  • The guys at revision effects have a great deinterlacer in their fieldskit product that you can see here…

    https://www.revisionfx.com/products/fieldskit/

It is very powerful, effective and it is the best I have seen so far. If anyone knows of one that is better, I am all ears. (Well, except for the eyes, nose, hands, legs and all these other things that just get in the way of things.)
