I like checks. When in Europe, I also like cheques.
Anything that I can do to shorten the distance between me and getting the deal is okay in my book.
My son is a general building contractor, he actually builds houses and doesn’t just use his trade as a metaphor. He has many different hammers and uses them all: jack hammers, power hammers, air guns, claw hammers, ballpeen (sp?), sledges and more. Depending on what he’s doing, he reaches for the right tool. Yes, the goal is to build a house but any artist that uses more than one tool has options that a one-size-fits-all mentality just can’t make available to a client or to themselves.
Different strokes for different folks — or not.

I would agree that old info is better than none. It’s why we leave our old articles up, as well.
I just wanted to have that caveat there so that readers who bump into this thread know that they need to double-check things they think that they might be learning from it.

You will likely owe them money for the cocaine, and the dry cleaner will come after you for the bill to clean the pimp suits from all the expensive wine spilled on it when the hookers climbed into the guy’s lap.

Not sure I would put much stock in that old article, especially when it comes to issues of networking, cross platform rendering and render farms. The article is seven years old and there is little of what we do on a computer today in 2008 that is the same as it was in 2001.

I use both Macs and PCs. I also use FCP, Premiere Pro and Avid. Why? Because if I can get a job on one or the other, what do I care, it’s the job that is important to me not the tool that gets it done.
For those that disagree, that is quite okay but you can hold out on principle — or you can make the compromise for principal.
I have never understood the concept of tools and platforms as religious icons or issues of principle. They are just tools, the more tools you know how to use, the more valuable you are to yourself and your family — and your company.

These kinds of things are done in the editing process using tools like Final Cut, Avid, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro, etc., and are done using cuts that are referred to as “J cuts” and “L cuts” and if you search out those terms using Google or here in the COW, you can find out a lot more in-depth on what they are and how they work.
The short and easy version (though this is greatly simplified and doesn’t at all cover all the bases) is that there are multiple cameras and angles, etc., represented on multiple layers and video tracks in the editing software.
You can drop out the video track of one layer while letting the audio continue to play while pulling the video from another track — or vice versa.
I have been meaning to do a tutorial for the library on this, so thanks for the reminder.

This is hardly a compelling enough reason to think that it will draw a steady source of income, especially when you are aiming for the DV/HDV market segment. As Adam and others have said, it takes very little time in your suite to pay for most or all of their own set-up.
You’d have to have some mighty nice furniture and one of those dream kitchens on the HGTV channel — oh, and Chef Emeril from the Food Network popping in to entertain and cook for your clients — to give a compelling enough reason to draw a crowd.
It’s the “value add” as others here have said, and when considering what value adds most people are looking for, it is the heavyweight gear that most people don’t own — the HD and DigiBeta gear, etc. — not fancy furniture that they want. Oh, they want the nice furniture but only as the icing — first, you have to give them the cake.
I don’t doubt that you could rent out your studio from time to time but I highly doubt that the present recipe is going to be a formula for financial recovery of expenses, let alone one for financial independence.

We have been doing some major recoding of the site and the boxes themselves, so this one appears to be a casualty of the updates.
You can enter the author name in the top search field and it will work. It does indeed appear broken in the lower search field.

This type of marketing has hurt Avid’s sales of the old Medéa stuff as Avid has a history of making things that use ROM tweaks (and other coding tricks) over the years to assure that Avids require Avid drives, etc.
The residual after effect of all this is that when users see only Avid products listed in the marketing, they look elsewhere — not always ready to trust that they will work under the circumstances in which users find themselves operating in.
Right or wrong that is the perception, and in a marketing war, perception is everything.
