Shoot them against a blue or green screen. Then you can do a color key that drops out the blue or green and overlay them onto whatever background you want. If you set up the strategy of the shot and background correctly, then you can create the illusion of tiny people in a world of gigantic objects.

In all the 13 years that I have been building online communities now, I have learned that just as the COW is made up of its team, there are many teams that I know that work together in the film and broadcast worlds. On the film and broadcast projects that I get to work on, they are always with the same people. It’s the old saying: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Teams seem to surface and resurface often on various projects. So uncontrolled snide and condescending egos are a sure guarantee that Mommy & Daddy’s monies paid to the film school are likely to be a bad investment and are just as likely to be monies spent to teach these kids a powerful lesson — and that is that many people with degrees end up working in fields unrelated to the ones in which they have their degree. :o)
Most all of the incredibly talented people I know in this industry have two things in common: They are incredibly talented and while they are indeed self assured and have strong egos, they are also very nice (most of them) and understand that they are surrounded by talented people whom they must interact with to get their jobs done and create something of value. The ones who aren’t nice are at least smart enough to keep their egos in check to the degree that they aren’t so obnoxious that they make themselves untenable on a project. If they are not, then they aren’t likely to work on many projects.
Set your goal to be part of a team and look for those that understand that principle. Oh, and don’t let the bastards get you down.

You CAN have the software legally installed on one desktop and one laptop.
But to keep your licenses in effect, ALWAYS remember to uninstall your copies and NEVER reformat a drive without first uninstalling the CS3 suite. This “recredits” your license account so that they can then be reinstalled again later. If you don’t remember this critical step, you will face a relicensing nightmare.

I just noticed that the RETAS site has the downloadable demo versions of their software but the sales site is showing the RETAS system as discontinued. I just got off the phone with one of the top RETAS artists in the world, Jesse Norton, and he told me that that is not right and that you can visit his site at fates.com and he will gladly give you any help that he can. RETAS is what you want for this. AE is the wrong tool for cel animation on a frame-by-frame basis. It wasn’t designed for this and you are going to have to do most of the work by hand if you try to use it to this level. The reason? You have a LOT of nuance — nice work by the way — and the more shadow, etc., that you have and also detail, the harder it’s going to be to use tools like layers and the puppet tool to allow you to fake something like this.
That is why RETAS is your answer. It was designed for this and it is what many of the Animé artists use. It’s whole reason d’etre is to do exactly what you want.

It sounds as if a series of Posterize Time, a few hold and bezier keyframes with varying degrees of velocity curves set, along with the cheese of the “trails” left by something like the Alien Skin plug-ins MAY get you where you want to go.
I haven’t seen the movie in years but if memory serves me well — and lately, I don’t always bet on it anymore — this is how I’d start to try to achieve the effect (at least the one I am recalling in my head).

DigiEffects has a plug-in called Quake (I believe) that does something like this, though it also adds a shaking of the camera to the mix. I am not sure how close you could get it to this by playing with the settings but it may get you kinda close to the effect. Perhaps if you write them (rsharp AT digieffects DOT com) they will be able to point to one of their new plug-ins. They tend to do these kinds of tricks.
I haven’t had a chance to look at videocopilot.net’s Twitch plug-in but the name tells me it MAY do this kind of stuff.
You may want to write Pierre or Pete (info AT revisionfx DOT com) with the re:vision FX team and ask them if they have anything that does this. They have some pretty powerful stuff in their toolkit.

The Flickr image is offline and returns an error but the YouTube video is just a basic Mac screensaver image.
I am scratching my head trying to remember any thread in the COW that unraveled the mystery of recreating the Mac OSX screensaver animation and I cannot think of a single thread. I also cannot recall ever seeing a link anywhere in the COW that was to a tutorial of the effect.

Here at the COW and also Aharon Rabinowitz would point to the same, when we want super-charged PCs we use Boldata.com laptops and desktop PCs. They are comparable to those built by BOXX and yet they are a lot cheaper. They kick butt all over the units sold by Dell. Consider these guys builders of “industrial strength” machines. ;o)
Andy Kretzer (akretzer AT boldata DOT com) is their director of sales and if you write him and tell him you are with the COW he will give you a great deal. He’s a really nice guy and isn’t like talking to the sales guys at Dell.
