i didnt see a forum for hardware, perhaps someone can help me.

    i’d like to upgrade, i have a Dell 5150:

    Pentium D 2.8Ghz
    Radeon X600 256mb
    2 Gigs of Ram
    XP Pro 32bit
    250gig HD 7200rpm

    heres what i work on:

mostly Flash and Photoshop, but i love After Effects and want to do more, i have well over 1000 fonts installed and i find that illustrator is slow starting up. (Photoshop starts very fast)
i want to get into 3DS Max or Maya (or Blender) and i dont want to wait for ages to do test renders.

i was looking at the Dell XPS range. the new 730 looks to have all the ‘Bells and Whistles’ but is it right for the job? is it just a gaming rig?
i find that sales guys havent a clue what they’re talking about.

i wouldn’t mind building my own. it might be fun. but the peace of mind of after sales and a warranty would be nice i suppose.

    Hi Liam,

Here at the COW and also Aharon Rabinowitz would point to the same, when we want super-charged PCs we use Boldata.com laptops and desktop PCs. They are comparable to those built by BOXX and yet they are a lot cheaper. They kick butt all over the units sold by Dell. Consider these guys builders of “industrial strength” machines. ;o)

Andy Kretzer (akretzer AT boldata DOT com) is their director of sales and if you write him and tell him you are with the COW he will give you a great deal. He’s a really nice guy and isn’t like talking to the sales guys at Dell.

    Best regards,

    Ron Lindeboom

put most of your money into the RAM and processor. You don’t need nvidia 8800GTS. AE is RAM hungry and processor intensive, not as 3-D intensive.

    thanks for the input,

i contacted andy at Boldata, im waiting on a quote.

What OS do you guys work on? i currently use XP Pro 32bit. this limits me to 3.5gigs of ram. if i get the latest screamingly fast ram and cpu, will this make a big difference or will i need to go the 64bit version and increase the ram beyond the 3.5gig limit to see big leaps in performance?
