I think that you misread Jon Barrie, John.
From what I just read, he didn’t say it couldn’t be done. He told you how it could be done and the method he’d use to do it. He also touched on the psychology of vision and the brain.
You may wish to rethink what he said as there is no video editing software that is going to know what to do in automating aq fine-tuning of the visual-to-audio syncing in your project — it is going to take a human being. And regardless of what tool you use, it is going to come down to that.

Uh, no.
If the banners bother you, Bob, then all I can say is the alternative is for us to turn off the site. We are fighting to keep up with the amount of traffic we get and right now we have over a dozen servers and two 100Mbit pipes with unlimited bandwidth — along with two Cisco routers and a third load-balancing hardware router. It all costs tens of thousands of dollars a month to run, so sorry if it offends you.
Kathlyn and I are not independently wealthy and we had to figure out long ago that if you are going to build something like the COW, it has to be a business. Compromises must be made and some are concessions we make to give you all tons of free services, and some compromises are yours to make — like putting up with a little inconvenience. If you can’t, then there’s little I can do or say about it.
We like the interface and are in it all day long and have to deal with the same issues you do, and we do not find the issue egregious. If you do, then that is your opinion.

It’s insane that the ones that demand the most are nearly always the ones who want to pay the least — if they want to pay at all — and will often treat you with abhorrent contempt while doing it.
No thanks. If you need filler for a demo reel, there are far better ways to get it.
There is no real money in working with grinders. “Busy” does not make a business. “Profit” makes a business.

If you research the company and find out what you think they could use and you do a bit of spec work to show them what you would do for them, quite often they will talk to you.
I get so many prospecting emails that I never look at them. They are never about me, our company or what we need. They are always about them and so my eyes glaze over in boredom and I quit reading.

Thanks for the feedback, Caleb. It is appreciated.
We have been working to resolve some issues here that is causing slowdowns. The tutorials section is now successfully load-balanced and we are now supporting this week 300% to 400% more concurrent connections downloading the articles than we could support a week or two ago.
The COW has nearly tripled in traffic from where we were on August 14, 2007. The growth in the last year has been staggering. We have had to triple the number of servers that feed this site and have had to even buy a hardware load-balancing system, as well as double the throughput pipe we had last August. Last August we had the capacity of 128 T-1s working concurrently, as of a month ago, we doubled that to the power of 256 T-1s working concurrently. Coupled to the load-balancer, these changes make for a LOT more connections that we can now successfully resolve, over what was possible before.
Unfortunately, we are learning this one step at a time and we are using the Summer months (here in North America) to work things out while the traffic is low.
We thought. ;o)
Yesterday, according to Google Analytics, we had a huge traffic day — over 48,900 totally unique users logging in during a single 24 hour period. And that doesn’t count the re-visits. Considering that the tutorials take the brunt of the traffic and are each weighing in at around a minimum of 10MBs or so — with some that range up to 80MBs and more — it really taxes the servers. Get hundreds or thousands of these connections happening concurrently, and you can see it takes a lot to drive Bessie’s bright orange smile here in the COW.
Last week, we isolated another area of the infrastructure that needs some beefing up (sorry, I couldn’t pass that up!) and so we ordered another huge quad Opteron server to assist in that area of our site. It should be here in a few days and will allow us to begin load balancing that area of the infrastructure and get traffic back to cooking again. We’ll be adding a couple more servers shortly after that, so in the end, we will be back to a near-instant access again.

Like you, I thought that Algolith was amazing. When I first saw it many years ago at NAB, I was so blown away that I spent quite a lot of time around their booth and brought many COW leaders by their booth to see it.
