When importing clips the worker needs to know the catalog name in advance (in case you have the avoid duplicates option enabled, or are creating metaclips, etc.), which means that some variables are unavailable at that time.

To do what you want you might need to do it in two stages with two watch actions. First, import clips based on a watch folder and set the Tape field as you do currently, then publish it to a temporary catalog. Secondly, have a server query that looks for clips in the temporary catalog and moves them to another catalog based on the tape field (using ${TP}).

By the way, you’re misusing the Tape field slightly, as that is intended for the reel number for old tape-based workflows. It isn’t normally used on modern tapeless workflows. It shouldn’t be a big problem but if you can I’d probably recommend using a user-defined field instead.

Good news – CatDV 10 includes full support for importing and exporting custom metadata fields to and from FCP 10.0.6! As 10.0.6 was still in beta when 10.0.0 was released you need to go to Preferences > Final Cut & Sequences and check the “Export FCPX XML files: Use latest version” option to use this feature.

If you have an example xml file that won’t import into CatDV, please mail it to support@squarebox.com so we can investigate.

Yes, you can export Final Cut 7 XML from Premiere Pro CS5 or later and import that into CatDV.

It’s somewhat ironic that after Apple dropped FCP 7, Final Cut XML files have emerged as the de facto industry standard for exchangng clips, sequences, and metadata between editing applications!

This is fixed in the next server update (6.7b10)

  • Hi Khashyar, your problem doesn’t sound familiar, and I’m a bit surprised by it becaue DV/DVCPRO is one of the basic codecs that QuickTime should have no problems at all with. Do you have a small example file that you’re having problems with that you can mail to support@squarebox.com for us to investigate?

The point of CatDV is that it is pretty easy on the whole to get started with – just launch the application, drag in some files, add comments to them, and you instantly have a searchable catalog of your assets – but that it will grow with you to support the most complicated networked workflows when required.

CatDV has an awful lot of capabiltiies under the hood if you need them, but if use the standalone version (even the standard edition) and stick to the simple menus then you can safely ignore most of that complexity.

Just to re-iterate what Bryson says – if you’re at all unsure about whether CatDV will work on a particular configuration or with particular files, just drop us a line to request an evaluation license. This will be a fully functional but time-limited version of the full application, so you can always test out your workflow on your hardware and with your media files before committing to making a purchase.

October 20, 2012 at 9:40 pm in reply to: Move files to another disc

    Hi Henrik,
Apologies for the delay replying. You can move or rename a file or folder within a disk very easily, just by updating the directory information, but to move a file from one disk to another involves physically copying it across, and then deleting it from the old disk. This can take a long time (hours in some cases, depending on how large the files are), plus CatDV is quite reluctant to delete the old files (in case something goes wrong with the copy for example). By default therefore CatDV won’t let you move files across file system boundaries, but you can enable this if you want to via the File System tab of CatDV Preferences.
