November 26, 2012 at 9:12 pm in reply to: Failed to publish changes: Error after importingThere are various services such as sendthisfile.com and dropbox that can be used to send large files.
Also, just to let you know, but the next update of CatDV has code to protect against thumbnails being created which are too large to save to the server. One situation we found where this could happen is when importing things like Illustrator or Word files and where CatDV was importing the thumbnail these files can contain without checking the size. This has been fixed in CatDV 10.0.1, due out later this week.

We are aware of one issue with the web client giving “java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: java.lang.String.getBytes(Ljava/nio/charset/Charset;)[B” if you use 6.7b9, which is due to using Java 1.5 with the new version of GWT we now include. Can you upgrade to Java 1.6 to resolve this?

-108 is a memory full error. You can delete multiple previews by going in via the Finder and deleting folders if necessary. You mght also want to consider upgrading as CatDV 7 is a few years old now and there have been a lot of fixes and improvements since then!

Yes, LCplus is a very old consumer product. though it’s still available for people who still need to convert some old DV tapes (or HDV if the playback mode is set to “downconvert”).
The name “Live” refers to the fact that you can transcode clips and add log notes while the tape is playing, rather than having to wait an hour for the tape to ingest.

November 6, 2012 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Failed to publish changes: Error after importingWhat error message precisely are you seeing? The data trunctation error is a database error and can only ever occur if you’re publishing catalogs to the server, not if you’re saving catalogs locally.
I’m one of the developers of CatDV so yes, I have been using CatDV v10 for quite a while now 🙂

What sort of clips are these, P2 or Canon? Are you saying v9 correctly imports them as a spanned clip or as separate clips? And that v10 imports a single clip but the duration is wrong and only matches the first clip in the spanned set?

That sounds like a bug. Check what version of CatDV you’re using at https://www.squarebox.co.uk/download1.html in case it’s been fixed. If not, please reproduce the problem then forward a copy of the CatDV Error Log (available via the Help menu) to support@squarebox.com so we can investigate.

November 3, 2012 at 10:02 pm in reply to: Failed to publish changes: Error after importingIt sounds like one of your thumbnail images at least is too large to save to the database. That sounds like a bug. If possible, please save the catalog that you can’t publish to the server locally to disk instead (File > Local Catalogs > Save As Catalog) and mail the file to support@squarebox.com.
What kind of clips are in that catalog, and what thumbnail size are you using?

I think Gerald and Bryson gave some good advice re the archiving problems but here are some hints if you have problems importing files into CatDV:
Size of catalogs – you can think of CatDV catalogs as being VERY roughly analogous to a folder on your hard disk, or a project in your editing application. There’s no hard and fast limit but just as you wouldn’t put 50,000 files in one folder with a flat hierarchy, or import an entire volume of media into one Final Cut project, it’s best not to drag that many assets into one catalog window. Instead, try to organise them in some sort of logical arrangement that makes sense to your workflow (by customer, by project, by episode, by tape, by month, by event, or whatever). The good thing is though, you can have as many catalogs as you want, and once they’re in the database on the server you can very easily search across all your assets regardless of which catalog they’re in.
Crashes – sometimes, a particular file can be corrupt and trigger a bug that causes a QuickTime codec to crash (especially 3rd party codecs). Try to isolate the file by noting what it was importing last or checking the CatDV error log file. Also, if you enable the protected player (in media playback preferences) that can help, plus you can set an autosave interval so you don’t lost too much work. If you do still have problems, go into Help > CatDV Error Log and press the Save button, then mail the log file zip archive to support@squarebox.com so we can investigate.
