Animated mask, a little bevel alpha, and some roughen edges.

Useful Things from Profound Effects used to do this. I’m not too sure on the product’s development or support at this time though. The product’s been sold to Sony.

What you should do is to scale up in Flash and export the PNG’s again. having said that there is a possibility that QTPro may be able to do this with the SWF file. Try it out on a short SWF sequence.

This shouldn’t happen. What else are you doing? Any precomps or effects in the workflow?

You shouldn’t scale as this will introduce pixelation. Ideally, you would redo your comp in AE with larger footage. For vector images scaling should’nt be a problem, you can use Motionmath scripts, scalleall.mm or scaleby.mm to enlarge layers to fit the current comp size. For version 6.5, use the ScaleComp.jsx script.

For raster images, it’ll give you an indication as to how large your source files need to be in order to maintain the original resolution. Then see how you can acquire the original with the new dimensions. For videos, there is really no way to have a higher resolution image. Your best bet is to use Photoshop’s Bi-linear or perhaps Nearest Neighbor (depending on image) to do the scaling. Then import the file into AE and replace the version that was scaled up by AE.

Secondly, your calculations seem to be off: for a 16″x20″ output at 360 dpi, you’d need a comp size that’s 5760×7200 pixel compo size. What you did in PS is fine.

Thanks Mylenium for chipping in. The controller was moved using some Wiggler (Expression) type values cos’ not everyone has the production bundle which comes with Motion Math – pre-version 6.5 . Expressions however comes with the Standard version.

What you should do is to pickwhip the position of the controller to the keyframes created by the Audio to Keyframes, keyframe assistant. Ensure that the old Expression script in the Expression box is replaced by the new script created by the pickwhip.

September 23, 2005 at 12:21 pm in reply to: complex task, perhaps an expression can solve?

[Guy] “hey Roland, in your tutorial,is there a way to get the numbers to stop, so the particle is only sampled once in time?”

Good Q! I fooled around a little but I can’t seem to get it to behave – sorry. It sounds achievable but somehow I’m not getting it. Let me kniow if you do manage to solve it.

Your best bet is to make a precomp, create a duplicate, mask off an area and use Time Remap to freeze the masked off area.

    Good Luck

Expressions can’t read a layer’s luminance values. But Particle Playground can. You can use PP’s Grid property to create the grid for you, using a Layer Map of the videos. This one’s achievable but a lot of planning and tweaking are required if you are particular where a specific layer sits within the grid.

To get each layer within the grid to react to the luminance level of a source layer, you’ll need to create a Property Mapper.

I suggest that you take a look at my Fun in Particle Playland COW tutorial to get you started on working with PP’ Grid, creating and controlling Layer Maps and setting up a Property Mapper.
