It’s a known issue with AE7 – it says so in the Installation doc. Not sure if 7.0.1 fixed it.

Don’t export unless it’s for an SWF or FLV. Instead use the render queue. Quicktime’s Animation CODEC at at quality setting of between 92-96% is pretty good in terms of visual quality and filesize.

Deinterlacing is done automatically by AE once you import your footage. To confirm this, select your footage item in the Project Pane. If it’s interlacee, you’ll see the description – Separating Lower or Upper, depending on the actual file you’re looking at.

There are better deinterlaces from 3rd party sources. But the one from AE is pretty ok. Check the COW’s tutorial section for at least two deinterlacing tutorials.

Check out the article, setting larger dpi )after a scan or disk to disc transfer) doesn’t neccessarily lead to a larger file size. It depends on whether you’re resampling the image for printing or scaling up/down the image. It’s rather complicated stuff. But the gist of it is that dpi is irrelevant to video.

And 10,000 for a pan is a huge and long pan. I suppose it’s more than just a normal pan that he’s after. But it’s correct to assume that he isn’t yet sure how large his image should be – hence he’s testing it out to see how much torture AE can take.

Best workflow is to use the method I suggested earlier. The test will run much faster and his final dimensions will reflect his actual needs without gorging up precious RAM.

I thought that Echo Fire was discontinued a while back – soon after AE supported firewire out on its own.

Anyways, look for your AE Prefs file and open it up with a plain text editor (best to make a backup with a Save as routine before venturing further).

Then scroll down to the bottom of the document and look for

“Scale to fit video monitor” = 00
“Scaling Quality” = “1”
“Video Monitor Aspect Ratio” = “1”

Off course you’re on a Mac, so it won’t say Win32 there but look for Firewire Preview or perhaps IEEE1394 Preview. Set it to 00 ( 2 zeroes).

The other two crucial items to look at are Mirror On Desktop …
AND
“Device” = 000 … (that’s 40 zeroes in there)

Ensure that your prefs are set to those values. Save the file – ensure that it is plain text format. Recite your favorite prayer and restart AE.

I know you’re not the IT guy but howzabout swapping the RAM chips on the two machines? That’ll be an instant answer as to whether it’s a hardware RAM issue.

Restart AE with the CTRL (CMND for Mac) key down until you see AE’s interface. The keystroke deletes your old preference file and creates a new one.

Ensure that you jump into preferences to set it back to when things were healthy.

And never believe everything that tech support tells you.

Time Stretching your keyframes? Marquee select the keyframes and select either the first or last keyframe (depends on whether you want the first or last selected keyframe to hold its position) and then Option and mouse drag.

BTW, there is a menu item under the help menu that gets you into the Shorcut Keys help file.
