I freelance for ESPN on trucks doing sports. It is getting rarer but many times we do take tape for elements for the show like lower thirds and player names. Yes the producer still hauls around a big box of tape and all trucks still drag one VTR around the country just in case.
That being said it has probably been five years since we ran a money (commercial) reel out of a truck even for the smallest networks. That all is done in master control now.
You are dealing with a large corporation, but maybe Bristol likes the degeneration caused by video tape. It does take a long time to change the corse of a large ship especially when there are multiple captains involved and the higher the captain, the more they are removed from the reality of day to day operations.

Did you have the “keep recording with loss of video” turned on in the menu?
Since AJA came out with that option I have never had a KiPro kick out, ever. My thought is that you were dropping frames from something else on the input. You can fix this too by sending sync to the unit. Now that I have enabled continuous record despite nuclear bomb blasts I have never experienced a kickout.
If you are doing concerts always bring earplugs even if you sit in a truck! Paper napkins when weted down and rubbed into a small ball also make an excellent substitute.
If you ever loose data on a KiPro all you have to do is hook it up by firewire to a mac and the files will rebuild and no loss of data. The only time I have ever lost data is on a power outage and the file did not close. But that is why you always use battery power supplies (UPS) to keep them alive.

July 23, 2013 at 9:33 pm in reply to: boom microphones and directional characteristicsSo there is an air gap between the cap and the microphone element allowing sound to travel to the back of the diafram. The longer the cap the more directional the mic. Sounds like this method would color the sound of the mic.
Thanks,
I push the record button and hope the client doesn’t look over my shoulder and try to tell me how to do it.

I cant even import a prores file into a new project. It takes the audio only

Yes I have MacDrive 8.
I tried to just import a clip into the project, it took a long time and only took the audio. I am in prores LT if that helps any.
I think you are onto something Ken.
Thanks

I found out the answer from an old fried who posts here “Tom Mathies” and the KiPro folks.
The TC out is for playback only, it is a dead port during recording.
I wish that they would loop through the TC port like they do everything else.
Thanks for the other info Gary.

Got it, that has been bugging me for a few years now. Thanks guys

You are correct Gary, damaged firewire port. While docked the Kipro talks to the drive through the port that looks like a powered esata connector. If the firewire port fails you have to dock the drive, and activate the “host” firewire 800 port in the menus.
The connection on the drive can be fixed, but I have not explored that option yet.
Thanks Gary!

I guess it boils down to experience & luck. I have had massive WD failures and find segate & lacie to live much longer lives. Saying that I have experienced a 100% failure rate between all drives. My experience with WD is they are lucky to make it a year.
