If you are working in FCP7 go to your autosave vault and open the last auto saved version. With luck you will lose only the last 30 mins of editing.

Mabel, FCP7 is a 32bit application and as such can only address a theoretical 4gig of ram, in practice 2.5gigs. So it doesn’t matter how much ram you throw at it, it can’t use any more. FCP7 is not processor aware, so it cant use the extra processors or cores as separate instances in the way that Compressor can. For these reasons we all wanted Apple to give us a 64bit version but they didn’t.

FCP7 is fine under 10.7 but is not supported in the newer operating systems such as Mavericks and Yosemte. You are OK with your Mac pro but if you get a new mac of any description you wont be able to instal an earlier operating system in order to run FCP7.

I’m a big fan of G-Tech drives. They are so well put together and crucially have top quality drives inside.

Boris is in effect a separate app which works within FCP and it’s window bears no relationship to your video resolution but with some forethought it works just fine. I never heard anyone making this complaint but most of us have been using FCP for years and so just accept that this is how things are. It would have been great if we could type directly in the FCP window, which perhaps you can do in Sony Vegas, I don’t know, but that’s the way it is unfortunately but I don’t have a problem.

If in a 1080 sequence I type:

If I type the same thing, again @72pt in a 4-3 DV sequence – it fits.

If you are using FCP5 you will probably have Livetype, where you can indeed set the frame size and work within it but that in itself requires some to-ing and fro-ng as well.

Actually I’ve never used footage from these Sony cameras but was interested to know for future reference in case I hit the same problem. I mentioned it to a colleague and he gave me the info that I gave to you.

There is a workflow method in there for FCP7 but things seem simpler in X. Anyway it’s good to hear that you have managed to convert the files in Compressor. ProRes is definitely the way to go and I don’t think there would be any quality loss if done correctly. Hopefully you’ll get the job done now. Good luck.

Yeah, you need software to interpret the folder structure then convert to ProRes. I can’t remember the name but I know it’s expensive, $250 or so. If you know someone with FCPX perhaps they could convert your files to Quicktime for you.

It looks ok to me, pretty standard Vimeo compression. Maybe you have limited bandwidth and viewing in low res.
