it’s hard to tell without seeing your exact setup, but if you apply this type of effect you probably need it to affect just one layer at a time and not a composite, so no need to pre-compose more than one layer or am I wrong?. if this is the case could just precomp the layer that needs the inner shadow with “Leave all attributes”. keyframes will stay in the master comp, and navigation is only an issue when setting the style of the inner shadow in the context of the other layers. since this is a pretty simple effect this should not take too much time.

I see. yes this will require that you set 2 windows to see how this effect looks in the context of the main comp. thank you for clearing that out. see Dave? pre-composing is causing some mess anyway you look at it 🙂

[Walter Soyka] “The resistance to precomping is never about the time it takes to create the precomp. “
I can’t speak for Op but in this particular case, he only needs to create an effect on a single layer at a time. if it is only one layer at a time, then he can use the “Leave all attributes” and this won’t change anything in time or space or keyframes for the layer so the precomp mess is avoided. I believe in this case we are actually talking about the time it takes, which is good enough reason if you have many layers or something. also it’s more elegant to just work on a layer not having to rewire stuff to make a rather simple effect work for you.
still waiting for Op to pitch in 🙂

I would approach it this way:
1. clean the already lighted map. make it dark. I have managed to do something pretty fast with a dark blur solid set to darker color mode

you can work on it in photoshop to put some of the texture back.2. separate the lights from the background. it’s easy because they are bright over very dark. you can set the layer to luma matte it’s duplicate with levels to make it more contrasty.

3. use any effect or combination of effects or setup that uses a luminance as a base for reveal. you could use fractal noise. I use CC Image wipe set to Hue. this gives me a cool base for the first lights. of course you could mask the parts you want.

4. use another layer for the main lights. same gradient map set to luminance. this will be the big lights. together with the previous layer it looks like this:

if you set masks you can control more of the dispersion. but the hard part of getting those little light in my opinion gets done by the using the luminance information this way or similar way. there are ways to perfect this right now the lights seem a bit pixelated or not detailed enough but I believe this could be perfected this way and with a reasonable amount of time 🙂 hope to see other ideas here.

Let’s let Op answer this one. take it away Chris?

Geez Dave! 🙂 have you read Op’s post? he writes he does not want to do that right in the post! it’s all there. take a nap we need you clear minded over here (and that other forum too)

it is, but OP does not want to use the layer style because of render order.
-
what codec are you using? if you have disk space considerations, for lossless + alpha you have the Quicktime PNG that does a very good job at compressing file size (the rendering calculation will take more time though). you also have the JPEG2000 Codec that supports Alpha. can even just render a luma matte (white on black) and save much more space. all of this is with ignoring the fact that in Ae you should be able to produce a far more superior matte to your material than in Premiere. if it’s not working as it should, there is some other problem. if you have a hard time with keylight, you can try primatte keyer that works in a different way that some users find easier.

Nice. tested it now and I see it’s working as an inner shadow on Alpha but without the layer itself… so you still need this as a duplicate of your layer. you can always ask it, maybe they will listen https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html
