I was thinking show before and after the a full res image. I can’t really tell what is going on but it seems you want the image to be divided in vertical rectangles or squares that are displacing is that correct? you can create a black and white representations of the way you want pixels to shift and use a displacement map to make the video shift it’s pixels in the same way.
maybe it’s something like this:

animate the displacement map fractal noise inside and the effect will be animated.

show a screenshot of the type of effect you want to create and we can offer some workarounds. this probably could be recreated using a displacement map that has this type of texture animating.

[Ferenc van der Velde] ” It’s just weird that there isn’t a standard AE effect for this. It seems like a simpler effect to code then the mesh warp effect with its curves and bezier handles. “
I agree that this kind of a distortion effect would be useful. how about sending a feature request? https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

I understand the frustration and the need for one or two layers to be excluded. Unfortunately there is no way of doing this without precomping into different composites. If layer based compositing is too limited for you maybe you should see if node based is more appealing.

I see. Fxphd is the high end level of tutorials I am aware of. Maybe after watching Mark Christiansen you will see that this is maybe all you needed. If you find something else please share.

if you need more flexibility in texture mapping then this is probably more suited for a 3D software. read here:

If that’s all you are doing, you should consider doing this in premiere. It will be more efficient.

Not with stroke effect alone. Maybe with combination of another effect but you can use shape layer stroke that has square tip and use it as an alpha matte for your logo.

if these are strokes of constant widths and plain brush and not fill’s, you could convert it to shapes and use a trim path operator.

this maybe look better than you thought by randomly opening all the paths too.
if this does not work, you could in Ae paint a pen path over each stroke and reveal it with the stroke effect. this could be the better approach because maybe your shapes won’t convert correctly. still you should make sure your logo’s animation does not steal the attention because the title is more important and the logo should not be too distracting

Corner pin effect with more points/pins -> 12 points. for more warp power, mesh warp is my favorite. all of these are under distort category. there are also plugins out there: https://www.redgiant.com/products/warp-effects/
