  • [Dan Tran] “This is the raw footage. Should I do my color corrections first before tracking in Mocha?

usually no. sometimes you can increase the contrast to help mocha but you can actually do this while in mocha by changing the color space. I was able to track your shot using shear and not perspective and setting the zoom parameter to help mocha with the rapid zooming in. 4% at the start and later (where you see the green keyframe) set it 24%. with a few tweaks here and there and you can get it to work.

next time try a better texture. it does not have to be green if you are not keying anything. this would help mocha a lot more then a few faded crosses. as for the start of the shot you can scale this manually because the there is no tracking data at the start

  • Establishing a proper mocha workflow depends how the shot looks like. Can we see the footage? ( both of you)

Wild guess: make sure you didn’t accidentally selected the layers as “Guide Layers” (right click->guide layer). If that’s not the case, show a full screenshot of your Ae interface so we can examine it. Also would help to share Current Os and Ae versions numbers and workflow details.

Thanks. I will experiment with this and hopefully wii wrap my head around it eventually.

    Thank you.

I understand (sort of) that toComp is transforming a point from layer space to comp space. Thus making it possible to have a 2D layer follow a 3D layer that reacts to a 3D Camera: https://www.motionscript.com/mastering-expressions/lst-lens-flare.html, but in what practical situation would you need toWorld? Is this a way to make a 3D layer not to be bound by comp space (camera). In layman terms please 🙂

Hi Dan. Why would you use toWorld when toComp accomplishes the 3D location to corrosponding 2D without parenting? What Op eventually did I think…

October 23, 2016 at 8:58 am in reply to: Seamless Merge of 2 Objects

You need 2 elements here: the photo of the kiak person on transparent, and the blurred background. Place the photo on top if the blurred bg so it will cover it completely (like reference 1). Now open the transform properties with the twirl down arrow for that layer. Click on the stopwatch for position, scale, rotation. Advance a second. Adjust scale, rotation and position according to reference 2. That’s about it.

[Ashraf Khan] “If i rotoscope and change the Color, will i get perfection ?

    perfection? hardly : )

the real question is what color do you want to change it to? there are not many options because this is dark material. it would take an amount of work to make it anything brighter. I would experiment in photoshop first to get the color I want. this looks fine to me.

if you find the right combination in terms of color then you can go on to rotoscoping. as for rotoscoping: this is not the worst roto job you could get. I would track this in Mocha:
    1. track the coffee mug with the plate – only transform (rotation, scale, position)

2.export transformation data and click invert so it will stabilize my shot

    3. apply it to the shot itself – now I have a stabilized shot where the coffee mug is barely moving.

    4. create a solid that will be my track matte to mask the coffee and the plate. also need to roto the hand.

5.create keyframes for the mask path where they need to as the shape changes. when I am done I will have a matte for my color correction adjustments that will mask the coffee and the plate completely.

    6. precomp the composition and re-introduce the motion from mocha by pasting the tracking data (but not clicking invert this time) to a null

    7. parenting the stabilized precomp to that null at the first frame in which I started the tracking in Mocha.

    8. collapse the precomp.

    hope you got this…

    you have limited options here.

you need to divide this tasks into 2 steps:
    1. isolating the object
    2. replacing the color using a set of color filters for the color you want.

    isolating the object
if this was a vibrant color, you could use adjustments to key out the object. but because the object is black and there is black in many other parts of the footage, this means you would have to use rotobrush or rotoscoping i.e trace the object throughout the video.

    replacing the color
here’s a nice tutorial for replacing black color. implement the workflow principles in Ae and if you are lucky this could work. you may have to adjust the specular highlights if the object is brighter.

October 21, 2016 at 5:00 pm in reply to: Animating vertices in a shape layer

[Tim Maddoux] “I have a shape layer masking a part of an image”

while you can use shapes to mask images, I find shape layers not efficient in many cases for this type of work. shapes are robust, complex and involve many possibilities, Ae Masks on the other hand only have a few parameters and this alone could potentially save you trouble with twirling down contents and what not. in addition, you can only use a shape layer as a matte if you set it as an alpha matte, a mask on the other hand can be applied on the image itself and if rotoscoping is the case, it probably should because you can lock different masks in the same layer (shapes paths cannot be locked), you could color label masks differently (shape is with the layer’s color label) and you could also use the handy layer window that offers different matte views. and you cannot feather shapes! (you could use a blur effect but that’s not the same thing)

[Tim Maddoux] Is there a way to animate the vertices of the shape to change its shape as it moves from right to left?

if you want to use shapes – you can certainly animate the vertices. you can reveal the shape contents and you will see a path in there.

you can animate it as you please. if you created a parametric shape (with the rectangle tool) you would have to first convert it to bezier path and set your first vertex point before you start animating. or drag with alt from the parametric shapes icon.
