November 13, 2015 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Any word on an update for El Capitan?

so as someone who is thinking of FINALLY transiting to fcpx onto a 2010 imac i7 (11,3) which is running the latest el capitan, since i have no plug-ins or third party apps then downloading fcpx 10.2.2 should run fine.

    right?

    thoughts?

    thanks in advance.

    thanks for the response.

i’m still pointed towards the evga gtx 660:

i was wondering if you had any power supply issues or was it just plug and play.

    thanks in advance.

    be well.

    your thoughts are most appreciated.

i have started another thread asking about “18hrs of fs100 interview footage”.

any and all thoughts are appreciated.

thank u for sharing your thoughts.

i appreciate your stressing the need to fully install the pro apps.

why no email? wouldn’t email assist in sending to ftp sites along with acquiring various elements (music/jpeg/etc)

again, thanks for being a wonderful resource.

    be well

i appreciate the feedback. along w/posting on creative cow, i also posted on dvxuser.com & dvinfo.net.

all seem to suggest that the mac pro is the way to go. i knew the idea of using the imac would be functionally okay but in time i would want more. i was willing to allow that learning curve to take some time then move the 24″ imac into its role as a machine for my home. that said, i am a video professional who now wants/needs to edit his own efforts-or at least make the 1st attempt. my needs are rather simple-mostly cuts and simple transitions all which can be easily accomplished on a imac w/4gb of ram and a 512 video card. where i am less secure is in the rendering time and dvd burning time. i imagine the mac pro would accomplish both tasks much quicker.

the difference in price between a mac pro and an imac is $1k which translates into 4 days of me paying one of my editors to sit w/me and go thru my footage. i’m sure once i get up and running on a mac pro, i’ll find 4 days “savings” to justify the cost.

at this moment, i’m leaning towards an 8 core. sounds like a bit over the top but the pricing for the cheaper models with additional ram and quicker video card leads me to believe the 8 core is the sweet spot in the used mac pro market.

of course, ymmv (your mileage may vary)

  • walter-thank u for the quick reply.

i had looked over previous posts which discuss this issue but i wonder if a blank statement such as “mac pros are always faster than imacs” is allows true.

taking in the differences between video cards, bus speed & architecture, the websire barefeats compared mac pros to imacs. https://www.barefeats.com/imac09b.html

the mac pros came out ahead BUT these were all current or near current systems.

in my original query, i’m wondering about the original mac pro 2.66 (are they all quads?) vs last year’s winter 2008 imac 3.08.

now u might still be right that the mac pro is still faster, i’m just wondering if that is really true when comparing 2006 vs 2008 machines.

as always, thank you in advance for sharing your considerable experience.

    ty-

    thanks for the thoughts.

i was at b&h today (again) and i’m also leaning towards the sd mixpre.

i wanted to give a couple of mics a listen (i’ll include the ev re50 on the list) but the place was jammed w/holiday shoppers. i need to get there when the doors open at 9am but w/the nyc transit strike getting around the city is a drag.

in a different post above, i had some questions about the marantz pmd670 compact flash recorder. ever use it? know anyone on this forum who knows their way around this tool?

though new on this forum, i’ve been reading several months/years of archived q&a looking at various topics that impact my production concerns and i often read your responses. i appreciate you sharing your obvious experience.

    thanks in advance.

December 20, 2005 at 3:21 am in reply to: XL1s Low light

    martin-

i recently spent 1.5hrs at b&h in nyc playing with the demo dv cameras they had set up. i’m presently in the market for a new small rig. i had never had a moment alone w/the xl1s till then. i found so many things i liked about the camera. the menus were very well organized, i liked where my hands fell on the camera body. i even liked the zoom control speed adjustment.

there was only one small issue that prevented me from buying the camera: i could not keep the darn thing in focus!. in low loght and at the tele end of a zoom the autofocus hunted like crazy. even in the middle of zoom shots, one moment in focus, the next out.

so i turned off the autofocus. zoomed into an object. manually focused. then zoomed out. turned on autofocus and the thng would continue to hunt in-out during the focusing.

much of my work is in available light. if i can’t count on the focusing mechanism, then the xl1s wasn’t the camera for me.

i’m sorry to hear that u may have also bumped up against the camera’s limits.

perhaps there are shooters w/more experience w/this camera who could lend their experience to create a workaround for u?
