final cut pro users with dedicated edit machine-please share set up thoughts

so, good folks, the 2.8 mac pro 8 core is in the studio!

i want to use this as a dedicated final cut pro tool.

but what else should i install?

i have a mac book pro. i could do a migration from the mbp to the mac pro and that would give the mac pro all of my email/airport passwords and permissions.

i imagine migration asst would also push ms office 2008 and final cut studio suite2 to the mac pro.

    web/email/fcp suite/ms office/carbon copy cloner

    what else should i install?

i want to keep this machine lean, green & mean!

any thoughts folks care to share as to how i should set-up my brand spankin’ new mac pro?

thanks in advance to those final cut pro heavy users who care to share.

    be well.

personally, I have all of the tools I might need with FCP Studio, installed on my main editing Mac. Photoshop, After Effects, Flash, and some often used utilities/plug-ins like Flip4Mac, Perian, CaptureIt. Most importantly for me, I keep this machine away from the internet…hardly ever connect unless I’m installing updates.

Absolutely not. Terrible idea to migrate ProApps from one machine to the other. You MUST do a clean install of all pro software. In fact do a clean install of every piece of software you want to install on that editing machine.

All our MacPros are dedicated production machines. No email, nothing extraneous to production. They’re all loaded with Final Cut Studio, Adobe Production Premium and assorted other tools as needed for the task at hand. All machines are set up for editing, graphic design, animation, DVD Authoring and BluRay prep among other things.

We have internet connected as we are constantly uploading / downloading materials to / from clients.

thank u for sharing your thoughts.

i appreciate your stressing the need to fully install the pro apps.

why no email? wouldn’t email assist in sending to ftp sites along with acquiring various elements (music/jpeg/etc)

again, thanks for being a wonderful resource.

    be well

    Rob,

Your original post and subject header suggest that you want to build a “dedicated” editing machine, but your other questions suggest otherwise. To most professionals a dedicated machine means, at the very least, no email, so it’s all a bit confusing.

I can assure you, after a year of using my formerly dedicated editing machine as my primary email machine as well, there are few worries. In the old days, and especially on Windows machines, it would be a concern, but Macs still continue to have relatively few issues with viruses, malware, etc.. If you keep a clone of your system drive at the ready at all times you will have no worries if you want to use your editing machine for email.

    I absolutely agree.
I’m sure that the most of the people posting in this forum don’t have a dedicated machine.
You don’t hear of problems arising for using internet with no-dedicated-Mac’s.
Just try to keep your System light.
