[Craig Seeman] “FCPX the problem here is that…”

    Where is this post from?

  • [Charlie Austin] “Because the client, who is paying you, requires it.”

For which task and/or which app?

Because in my experience 100% of the time (the last 3-4 years at least) has been, that I’m only asked for an EDL out of pure habit. Blissfully ignorant of all the other, far superior options they have. Like XML.

  • There’s actually a “Voiceover Enhancement” audio filter that is in fact THREE filters in one. I use that a lot as a basis for further tweaking, assuming the presets (that are already set to average more voice relevant settings, not flat) don’t do what I want.

  • If the animation is always the same, you can of course simply use the Copy and Paste Attributes commands. Even if just the timing is roughly the same you could use it and simply tweak the keyframes individually as needed, but at least you wouldn’t have to set/activate them first.

[Jeff Kirkland] “so if that failed, the Coremelt plugins aren’t likely to fare any better.”

I would only agree in so far, that no matter which of the two you use, if you simply just slap them on and hit “Track”, the default results will probably be very similar. But if you don’t utilize the various options and little tricks each offer (which, as I said, are almost entirely different in each… most definitely in terms of handling) on an initially failed track, then neither is going to do the job. If you do, it may very well work in one but not the other and vice versa. It all ultimately depends on the footage.

Again, there are demos, so there is an easy and FREE way of finding out. So, to be honest, I don’t even really understand the question. We don’t have the footage, so there’s no way we could even know and there is no one answer when it comes to something like tracking. Nothing we could say or recommend could top or be more useful than simply trying it.

But bottom line: if AE couldn’t in fact do it (assuming you actually tweaked the options to their full extent [and knew what they are], not just slap it on as described), then I doubt Slice or Track X are going to fair any better. I’d be surprised if they did, yes.

[Jeff Kirkland] “Keep in mind that TrackX and SliceX are both powered by Mocha so if the AE version of Mocha couldn’t track it, they’re probably not going to either.”

The two implementations are entirely different beasts. AE’s version of mocha is nowhere near as limited.

Nonetheless, my money would be on Coremelt, for price reasons alone. Then for reasons of integration as Noah mentioned. Aside from their plugins being a definite “must have” for FCP in my book either way. And a point tracker (Motion’s) will never be able to do as good of a job as a planar one. And you already know AE can’t do it, so what do you have to lose?

And you realize, too, that there are DEMOS of all the Coremelt plugins??

[Walter Soyka] “I don’t think anyone is iterating as quickly or as broadly as BMD is right now. “

Maybe. I’ll just take your word for it. I don’t have an Excel-sheet comparison to check off and be sure. But again, whether all that is “more mass than class” is yet to be seen and decided for everyone individually. In terms of NLE functionality, nothing sticks out for me, especially in the context of its overall performance. Track-based has become a complete no-go for me anyway, when given the choice. As a color-corrector on the other hand it will probably stay my go-to for higher end CCs for a while to come.

[Walter Soyka] “Which features do you think are non-improvements?”

That’s all in the eye of the be-user, no? 😉 Arguments over purely subjective “usefulness” of bullet point are rarely (as in never) very fruitful. One thing may be a complete god send for you, whilst meaningless for me. And of course the other way around. Not something I find worth spending time on… again.

[Walter Soyka] “knowing when an individual word occurs in video, rather than a sentence, allows you to cut from the script.”

I don’t see how hearing just a single word isolated from a sentence somehow poses some sort of “editing advantage”, sorry. If that’s what you’re describing. Aside from the fact that with what I was talking about you can still search for a single occurrence, too. If you need the COUNT on the occurrences, then have them generate a Word document along side.

Put in a slider to define the “size” of regions from a single word up to a whole paragraph per range and you’re good. But considering the way favorites work and their limitations (no overlap for one), they probably wouldn’t actually lend themselves very well to that small of a region such as a single word. But for my purposes I would find that to be complete and utter overkill anyway.

[Walter Soyka] “I think it’d make a great feature request and I hope you submit it.”

    For which app now?

I have had various discussions with people that could make something like this happen either inside and/or outside of FCP, yes. Unfortunately e.g. Philipp Hodgetts and I are completely contrary opinion on the use of favorites in general, let alone in this way. Because IA would be one example with their “magic keywords” feature in Lumberjack, which unfortunately (for me) only works as keyword ranges as well.

August 23, 2016 at 10:48 am in reply to: Yet another update for Resolve

[Walter Soyka] “Are you limiting the context of your comments to Resolve as an NLE?”

In the context of this thread, yes.

[Walter Soyka] “Resolve is a very serious force in color correction in a way that IKEA is not in furniture.”

I’m sorry, but how is IKEA not “a serious force” in furniture? 😀 How many other international furniture chains pop to mind when you say “furniture”? And how do they fair in terms of marketshare, revenue etc. etc. in comparison? Not sure how you define “serious force” I guess! Completely aside from that of course being an apple and oranges comparison anyway. 🙂

[Walter Soyka] “constant, relentless, iterative improvement “

Who is not doing that? Because that’s pretty much the top argument I hear right off the bat in favor of pretty much every NLE I can think of (aside from maybe Avid) all the time. As of the online-ization of every app, I don’t even see how that can be considered a USP anymore. Nor do I see how more frequent updates somehow automatically equal a better product. Couldn’t one in fact suspect the exact opposite just as well?

Especially since I get the feeling when something is added or fixed in X or PPro etc., it’s a big “Finally!”. With Resolve it’s a “relentless, iterative improvement!“. 😀

But then from what I have seen and heard (e.g. in this thread), the question is if those are actual improvements, or just continuous effort to win the Ultimate Feature List Length competition, with in fact complete disregard for the improved stability and usability of existing features.

August 23, 2016 at 10:23 am in reply to: Sales motivation?

[Mark Suszko] “It makes me wonder, do they know something I don’t? … Or is it just something to do with the business calendar and inventory numbers?”

I’d say, depending on the vendor and product, one or the other. For one, considering X’s “normal” update cycle of the last five years and the fact that we are currently far past the usual 3-4 months, the next update I think could be considered 10 months pregnant. And if any of the vendors are in fact on the beta, then that may well fuel what it is they want out the door as much as possible, before new features of the update that may overlap are released. Or they themselves are about to release the next generation!

Either way, even if you did buy something the day before the next update comes out, that becomes obsolete because of it, you’ll never know if that was coincidence or calculation. 😉

[Bret Williams] “mObject is about a lot more than 3D text”

Oh boy… MUCH more, yes. Even if you ignored the fact that you can import and manipulate any given OBJ file, the textures are more sophisticated and flexible, the renderer even more so (ray-tracer!), you have various other options such as smoke and the likes AND you can do things like integrate drop zones into any given scene/object to be populated in FCP! And yes, they’re currently working on a v2, which, of course, is supposed to be “amazing” (and I don’t actually doubt it). 🙂
