Ah. Then you didn’t let FCP finish the import of the footage from the camera. I’m guessing you have a little camera icon on some or even all of your clips in the event. You need to connect the camera/card and choose “Reimport from camera/archive” first and let the import finish.

You need to make sure that the actual project is selected/active. Either by clicking in the timeline or selecting it in the project library. In the old version one could easily change to/activate the Event browser when passing over it on the way to the menu. Drove me nuts.
Your best bet is to simply use the Share Menu at the far right of the toolbar/dashboard. That way you’re not passing over anything with your mouse.
… then upgrade to Mavericks/10.1.x. 😉

No, as I said before, FCP scans nothing but the library and goes by what is in there. Be it original media or aliases that lead to specific (original) media. If anything, you’re simply defining a new location for media that is being referenced by aliases that exist in the library, yes.

Exactly. That’s media management. And it’s a good thing that it’s that way. That makes it impossible for FCP to change anything outside of the library. If it did or could, that would be detrimental. It’s a (brilliant) feature, not a bug.

X is extremely strict about metadata, which again is a feature. That makes the media management rock solid if you don’t mess things up yourself, even if that means having to give up a certain amount of flexibility. Which includes relinking things willy-nilly. Whether they’re the correct files or not.
Bottom line, I’d say the only thing anyone is in fact missing here is the option to specifically relink proxy files and not just the original/optimized. Which I’m not actually sure makes a lot of sense, assuming you’re “playing by the (simple) rules”. So it’s not problem with the media management per se imho, just a missing feature for an exception to those rules. But if it’s something essential for your everyday workflow, you’d need to hit the feedback page.

I personally use FCP’s archive feature for any and all cards that come in. That way I not only have an immediate backup of the original files, but also have the option to simply use the “Reimport from camera/card” command if needed (such as in a case like this). I highly recommend it.

Erm… you can do that in X also. 🙂 You could even rename the original Clip in the Finder if you wanted and FCP wouldn’t lose the connection. Not too sure if other NLEs can/will do that. I know 7 can’t/won’t.

Even before it was (greatly) improved with 10.1.2 I had an extremely good track record synching with FCP. Even in some cases where the camera audio wasn’t even audible at first because it was so quite. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised in the past, even if nothing is 100% bullet-proof. I wouldn’t knock it till you try it. 😉

It would certainly make a difference if the TBo 1 came before the TBo 2 device in the chain, since the first is obviously incapable of catering to the latter’s bus speed. But why the machine goes dark is anyone’s guess. That was mine. 🙂
