  • [Scott Witthaus] “wouldn’t you say that once you animate the opacity, you have created an effect?”

Sure. But this is about/affects any and everything that is explicitly under the EFFECTS section in the Inspector. Nothing below it (which also shows up in the Video Animation tab).

Mask the group that it is in and simply animate the moon?

  • [Nick Toth] “It has to be an effect that was added from the Effects Browser”

Which was my exact point, yes. Opacity is not an effect that one adds.

  • [Scott Witthaus] “Opened the video animation, highlighted the opacity bar with my keyframes and hit delete. And that does delete the entire clip, not the opacity animation. “

It referring to deleting an entire effect from a clip, not the keyframes. How are you going to delete the opacity parameter from a clip? 😀

If you’re deleting the entire clip, then you apparently aren’t selecting an effect/parameter that is in fact deletable. Therefore the clip is (logically) deleted. Because if I apply an effect to a clip and do as described, the effect and not the clip is deleted as expected, yes.

But I also just simply use the Inspector for any like that. Going the route via the Video Animation tab is far too many click and fiddly in comparison.

Sure. Simply select the ENTIRE clip and assign the keyword! 😀

  • [Brett Sherman] “guessing the focal length of the lens.”

You’re shifting the goal posts here. There was never any talk of focal lengths (aside from not even having them in FCP). Obviously one needs to keep the comparison at a reasonable level. Since, no, plugins such as those from CoreMelt are never intended to replace packages such as SynthEyes, Boujou, the full mocha, PFTrack or what not else. That’d be a pretty silly and disproportionate assumption. But I’d say what they offer and especially at what PRICE-POINT, they’re a steal in comparison and will in fact do great with the vast majority of track work that I see people asking for in this context.

[Brett Sherman] “You’ll notice all the examples have a single motion to them without panning, and there isn’t any orbiting.”

Am I right in assuming that you haven’t actually ever used Track or SliceX? Because they do in fact offer transformation AND perspective tracking. So pans are not in fact as big of a deal as you seem to assume. They’re just a lot more fiddly than a simple track, which is probably why they chose not to go into them in the demos. But then, if that’s what you need and don’t like what TrackX gives you, the alternatives are out there.

But again, keeping the plugins in reasonable and fair perspective, they’re not intended to nor will they replace a “real” dedicated camera tracker. That’s like assuming the built-in 3D titles are going to somehow replace something like Cinema 4D or even mObject. Of course they won’t. But it will be by far enough for a lot of people.

  • [Jason Jenkins] “maybe they actually sold the 3D Title code to Apple and took home a nice paycheck.”

Erm… hardly. The underpinnings of both couldn’t be any more different. And Apple isn’t exactly NEW to 3D.

  • [Richard Herd] “It can’t be too difficult from here to apply that to a mask.”

You mean apply to a vector shape of sorts? Right, it isn’t. Simply make an SVG of it and use glyphter.com to make a font of it. Done.

  • [Mark Suszko] “Not sure if you’re trolling, but… “

Really?? I would have thought a dancing cow couldn’t make it any more obvious. ;D Go figger.

Just to be sure: that couldn’t have been meant any more sarcastic, no. I find the new 3D Titles quite brilliant and a superb addition! Whether I end up using them or not, or should I actually say how, when, where etc. is yet to be seen. Either way I’m very happy to have them at my disposal.

And I completely agree. Comparing the built-in 3D of FCP to mObject is complete nonsense. mObject is exponentially more powerful and flexible and has an entirely different target audience to boot. mObjest is maybe 20% a titler. Beyond that it has advanced shaders, obj import, particle and smoke fx, drop zones(!) etc. etc. etc. … a complete different ball game imho.

  • Oh, and I think it’s fairly safe to say, that Apple didn’t use anything but the Motion tracker in this: https://images.apple.com/media/us/mac/motion-5/2015/tour/3d-titles/motion5-3d-titles-cc-us-20150414_r848-9dwc.mov
