I don’t think it’s a scam for Apple to get more money. It may be beneficial if you want to teach video, but if you’re going to be an editor, legit places are most likely more interested in your reel.
I look at it like this: When I was in college, anyone with a pulse could get a degree in video, but having that degree didn’t make them any good (we’re all just punk kids, lol). I feel it’s the same with a certification. You may learn what all the buttons do, but that doesn’t really mean you’re any good.

The clips that have been converted to ProRes….give them the EXACT same name the XDCam Clips have. Then MOVE, not delete, the XDam clips from your media array and put the ProRes clips in their place.
That should get FCP to see them as ProRes. If not, you can highlight the clips in your sequence, right-click, reconnect media, and connect them to the ProRes clips.

I’ve never heard of Spotlight causing issues before either, but if you insist on downloading something you can download EasyFind. It’s a free download my boss insisted I install for searching our 16TB Xsan.

I would recommend Shane’s Getting Organized in Final Cut Pro DVD. It doesn’t teach you how to use FCP to edit, but the organization/media management of FCP seems to always get Avid users.
As for learning how to use FCP to edit, there is just so much stuff on the web (and here on the COW) that i’d recommend watching tutorials on the web for a while.

You don’t need ProRes HQ if all your footage is DV. That’s overkill.
If you change it to regular ProRes and you are still seeing quality issues, my guess would be that is IS indeed a monitoring issue.

Also, if they are looking worse than you expected, be sure you have rendered your timeline fully. And are you looking at a reference monitor or your computer monitor?

Change your timeline compressor to ProRes422. Of course, if you export out to MiniDV tape, your graphics will be subject to DV compression. But if you export a Quicktime Movie at current settings, it will encode as ProRes422

I work on FCP6, and I noticed if you toggle snapping WHILE dragging a clip, it will toggle back to its original status once you drop the clip.
So to keep snapping on or off, make sure you are not in the middle of dragging a clip when you toggle it.
This has been consistent for me at home and at work, so I don’t think I’m experience a big myself.

Ideally, you want to export a self contained Quicktime out of final cut (File > Export > Quicktime Movie) and bring that new file into Compressor.
Once in Compressor, find the “DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes” preset. There are 2 settings involved. One that makes an MPEG file and another that makes an .ac3 file, which is audio. Since your video is only 10 minutes long, I would load the MPEG setting into the Inspector window and navigate to the Quality tab. Change the settings to CBR with a data rate of 7.5 to 8mbps.
Click submit and let Compressor do it’s thing.
Once it finishes exporting. Bring those 2 files into iDVD. I would take the time to learn DVD Studio Pro though…

We have these cameras at my work and I just ingested from an SxS card yesterday for the first time. It was real easy.
FIrst you want to back up the original file structure of the SxS card to a hard drive / LTO / blu-ray / whatever/
Then you want the Log and Transfer software from Sony:
Then all you have to do is open FCP and go to File > Log and Transfer. Yesterday, the media mounted automatically. If it doesn’t for you, there is a button in the top right corner of the window that looks like a folder with a plus sign on it. Click on it and locate your media.
Also, I am working with FCS2. I’m not sure if it’s different with FCS/FCP7. I doubt it is though.
