Because you shot 24p and not 24pA, you cannot remove pulldown during capture. So yes, you’re video is 29.97 – except it’s 24fps with frames and fields duplicated to fill 29.97fps.
Unless you NEED 23.98 for some reason, just treat your footage as if it’s 29.97 and edit in a 29.97 timeline.
If you really want 23.98, you’ll have to bring your captured footage into Compressor, turn Frame Controls on, and do a reverse telecine

Select the sequence in the Browser window that you want to send to Soundtrack Pro.
Right Click > Sent to > Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project
Clean up the audio, then export an .aiff out of STP that is 16-bit 48KHz. Then bring that .aiff into your FCP sequence.
I personally like to turn off the tracks of my original audio, and then I drop the new .aiff file underneath it all. That way if I want to compare, it’s easy to do so.

Hi Neil,
Just curious, but what did you test your DVD on?
Also, just a comment about fonts: A general rule of thumb is to use thick san serif fonts for on-screen type, such as Helvetica, Arial, the fonts that don’t have those extra stems on the ends of the letter. If you used a serifed font, then maybe that could be the problem. This is all just a hunch since I haven’t seen your DVD…

Since you’re saying DVDSP is ripping your graphics apart, I can’t help but wonder if you’re encoding to MPEG with DVDSP. Use Compressor (which isn’t slow if you set up your virtual cluster) to create the MPEG and AC3 files. THEN brings those into DVDSP.
As far as the interface in Color…I recall someone saying it was aimed toward long-time colorists who used a DiVinci, which maybe has a wonky UI if you’re not a hardcore colorist, but who cares. Learn it. Buy Walter’s Getting Started with Color DVD and learn it. It’s not that hard… Actually, the interface makes sense if you ask me… I just wish I had a Tangent Wave
And sure, Motion isn’t as good as After Effects. It’s far less capable. But its great for beginners or people like me who hate doing motion graphics, but have to occasionally create some. And a lot of times I watch peoples motion graphics reels on Youtube for “inspiration” I’ve never seen something and thought, “hmm…that can’t be done in Motion.”
I don’t even think FCP needs a make over, but then again, all the people who think it does are better than me. So maybe I’m just missing something…
And besides, you get a lot for 1000 bucks….

You’ll need the free Sony Log and Transfer software to Log and Transfer in FCP:
XDCam works quite well with FCP. I recommend working in a ProRes timeline.

Your camera is most likely recording stereo audio. So leave it as is – left channel panned to -1, right channel panned to +1

If you have a mono track, panning it center would give you dual mono – the same audio coming out of both left and right speakers.
If you panned your stereo tracks to the center, I suspect it would do the same. Give it a try and look at your audio meters. See what happens

because it’s stereo. One channel is panned left (-1) and the other is panned right (+1)
