  • DVX100 24p video and sound out of sync

Posted by Jack Fox on September 3, 2010 at 6:23 pm

I shot a video using 24p enhanced. Captured using FireWire NTSC with DV NTSÇ 48 kHz Advance (2:3:3:2) pulldown removal. When I play it in Quicktime or Import to Final Cut it comes in as 29.97fps. I think it is a timing issue but I cannot figure out where. I did try to bring it into a 23.98 timeline, that I usually use in these circumstances, and the sound plays but the video does not. Please advise.

Because you shot 24p and not 24pA, you cannot remove pulldown during capture. So yes, you’re video is 29.97 – except it’s 24fps with frames and fields duplicated to fill 29.97fps.

Unless you NEED 23.98 for some reason, just treat your footage as if it’s 29.97 and edit in a 29.97 timeline.

If you really want 23.98, you’ll have to bring your captured footage into Compressor, turn Frame Controls on, and do a reverse telecine

It was 24pa. When I try a 29.97 timeline the sound is still not syncing with video.

Open Log and Capture and go into the Capture Settings tab.

Does Capture/Input say “DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal”

I believe the problem was not using an internal drive other than the one Final Cut is located.

Actually, although using a different internal drive than the FCP drive is a good idea, I now believe the problem is a defect in FCP 6 regarding the “NOW” button for captures. If you fail to hit “esc” before the end of you timecode, the video and audio sync will be out of sync.

Not lazy but cheap maybe. I use the camera as a deck and I don’t want to wear it out, so I capture the entire tape. In the past I used TC limits for the entire tape and it worked fine, but this time I needed to get all of the lead in I could get so I had to begin using “NOW.” It works fine, but you need to sit on it to make sure you stop it manually before it gets to the TC end. Thanks for your experience and explanation. I think you hit it on the head when you said the camera reverts to 29.97. I think it does that right at the end when it runs out of TC. Thanks.

This sync problem with 24pa capture has been plaguing me for years. As i do mainly dance shows one shot for an hour.
You guys have solved it for me.
    1. Split the tape into segments using the esc key and reassemble on the timeline.
    2. Never let the tape run to the end with “capture now”.
    Perfect sync now⁄! Thanks guys.
