    Hi Mr. Gissing and all,
I used Better Rename to rename duplicately named copied files from a Canon Vixia in a folder on an ext drive. Then re-imported these .mts files into a bin in Resolve 15.
Used them to make a second timeline, then I copied and pasted clips into the first. Does that process make sense?
What happened: after the paste: the first timeline turned into one giant clip. An earlier timeline shows many red unlinked media shots all mixed up with the new and or old clips.
Just succeeded in restoring an earlier version from an auto backup. Took forever. I wonder if any of this related to my Firewire 800 drives and TB2 hub? Am I doing something (or many things) wrong?

    Thanks for any help,
    Robert

Thanks David, i found that cmd C and cmd V opened the same popup menu with no duplicate option. I thought maybe it was the dread Catalina but maybe it’s the dread Resolve version 15. I will now have to look at R 16 and how to transfer projects. But actually I found a workaround — to copy the entire timeline in the TL window and open a new TL with those shots. Just a little flaky.
    All best,
    Versions: !&$%#!
    Thanks again,

Thanks, David, I will check out your suggestions.
The popup menu on the media page for R 15 does not offer a “timeline duplicate” option. I will try the edit page.
    Cheers,

Thanks so much, Michael. I re-read your post. I guess I need to rename the files on the external drives and reimport them into Resolve bins.
    That’s very helpful.
I will do that before any further editing.
    Best regards,

    Hi Michael,
Thanks so much for your comments.
I have the camera I have — a Canon Vixia. Can’t switch. And I have already recorded clips.
I see there’s an option in Resolve to add a Reel Name to the clip attributes based on the bin name. Will that solve the issue of duplicate filenames if they have a different Reel Name attribute? I’m hesitant to add clips to a timeline until I understand how to deal with the clips I already have.
    Thanks again,
    Best regards,
    Robert

    Thanks, Mark.
How do you do searches like that in Adobe pdfs.? If I search copy timeline I get all pages with the word copy and all with the word timeline. If I put it in quotes like “copy timeline” or try copy AND timeline I get no response. Does that mean this phrase or these concepts don’t exist in the manual?
    Best,

Thanks Michael, this is from a Canon camera filming on reformatted cards. I guess it makes sense to the camera to start a fresh card with 0000.
I have saved all the files in separate folders on drives, will look for renaming software and maybe have to re-import into Resolve.
I noticed this when organizing bins.
Before editing or using the dupe-named files, thankfully.
    Best,

  • Hi Andy,
Both of these are fairly complex programs with lots of buttons which is where the learning curve comes in. They use different data storage systems so it takes a little time to grasp the differences.

Premiere updates all the time and has a reputation for being slightly less stable or predictable than some other programs. Once you get up and running it can be fairly intuititive and has a decent amount of documentation. You can actually talk to some smart support people in India if you’re willing to be on hold for an hour or two. Adobe supports the past two versions; some folks say that the most recent version, whichever it is, doesn’t always work for them. I’m working on learning Resolve to see if it’s any more stable but am just getting into it. I don’t know its stability reputation or how to find support or documentation. It has updated twice since I bought an expensive instruction book.

Good luck, let us know what you decide,
    Robert

    Hey Steve,
An interesting experience. Do you not keep your pr projects in that folder you mentioned?
    Documents>Adobe>Premiere Pro>14.0>{username}

If not where do you keep them? I keep mine in
    {username}>Documents>Adobe>Premiere Pro>14.0
    or someplace like that.

    Thanks,
    Robert

Thanks Jim. I guess one moral is to unplug the Catalina even when the computer is shut down. (During a thunderstorm). And thanks for the word about Diskdrill.
I’m “stuck” with a Catalina imac. I guess one has to pick up a 2018 machine to run Mojave.
Sympathies, though. I have to re-cut parts of a vintage Adobe Pr Pro “2013” project that somebody helped me recover.
    Best,
