I acquired a FCP 7.0.1 (you can find them on ebay) and was able to download/update to 7.0.3 through Apple.

  • Thanks, Christopher, I guess you mean noticeably better. Simply transcoding to ProRes 422 and setting fields to none is better than de-interlacing with the Compressor deinterlace function? Or just better than the deinterlace filter?

  • Christopher, could you clarify something about your proposed process?
    1) disable layers with text and graphics
    2) send sequence to compressor and transcode to ProRes 422 using the de-interlacing filter with frame control settings
    3) change fcp timeline settings to ProRes 422 progressive
    4) import the de-interlaced video file and replace the old
    5) render titles and graphics over the new footage and voila!

I don’t understand 1) and 5). Do you mean leave the text and graphics interlaced? Are they in something like AE and not the FCP timeline? By what process do you “render them over the new footage”? Is text created in an interlaced FCP timeline not really interlaced?
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • I’m also interested in this process because I’m working with interlaced NTSC footage cut into a timeline, and seeing artifacts of the interlacing. I’ve been told that this footage is in “Apple codec.” I wonder what changes you are making to your files to that makes them look clean and sharp–is this some kind of preview that you are rendering in Compressor? Please offer more detail.

I cut most of my project in FCP 5.5 and am now working in FCP 7. The additional complication is that I am inserting intertitles and don’t know if I will have to redo them later in a progressive release format, such as 720p.

I wonder if deinterlacing with Compressor or some other means will help or hurt the conversion, and how that may affect intertitles.

    Cheers.

January 1, 2014 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Hardcore FCP user now moving to Premiere

Here’s a thread I started on linked in the Premiere forum. There were some interesting posts. It’s a good forum. https://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&gid=157827&type=member&item=266445894&qid=fbad83ca-29a1-4053-81dc-e81c77a293af&goback=.gmr_157827

Hi, looking for some suggestions from this helpful and knowledgeable group. I worked with FCP 5.5 for some years, but recently upgraded to a faster MacBook Pro and Premiere CC.
I’ve learned some basic stuff and have edited DLSLR footage in timelines, but I keep getting hung up on simple interface, button, and keyboard shortcut controls.

Many of the resources I’ve found are CS6 specific—and CC has a few little differences in buttons, keystrokes, and menus. Others are task-specific: they document or demonstrate procedures, but rarely address interface options and menus in any consistent way.

    Here’s what I’m using:
Adobe’s reference pdf for CC—hard to search, task-focused. Different keyboard shortcuts for Windows and Mac.
An Editor’s Guide to Adobe Premiere Pro, 2nd Ed, by Harrington, Carman, and Greenberg, Peachpit Press– same issues plus it’s for CS6
Lynda.com—a really good course for CS6 by Maxim Jago with interface material but for CS6.
Larry Jordan’s courses—CS6-specific, task oriented, not much on the interface, can’t search
Adobe support site—task-oriented, not much on the interface, can’t search
    Adobe tutorial videos—same issues

I want to know the interface very well—viewing, control options, menus—and just can’t find this stuff for Premiere CC.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Does no one have any insight or ideas about this? I’d be most grateful. I can pull back and finish this project in FCP7 but the XML import to Premiere seems so tantalizingly almost successful.

November 17, 2013 at 11:38 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro XML for Premiere

OK, I installed FCP7 on a new machine and opened the project I started in FCP5.1

Exporting as XML from FCP 7 and importing into PPro CC almost works except for 2 things:

    1. Major: Only half the 30 minute timeline is visible in PPro. PPro shows the clip lengths and edit points, but starting from the halfway point only a 4-5 of 50 remaining clips are visible. A couple are text clips and a couple are video clips. The invisible clips appear with diagonal lines in the timeline, and black in the source and program monitors. Is there anything to make this work?

    2. Minor: Text clips that are on the V2 track in FCP show up on the V2 track in PPro but appear as overlays on the PPro program monitor. A video clip on V2 appears as a cut, like it does in FCP. Is there any way to make a text clip on V2 read as a cut to an intertitle, like it does in FCP? In fact, does PPro by default make V2 text clips overlays. Is there a way to change this?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

November 17, 2013 at 11:32 pm in reply to: Reference monitor in PPro CC not working with an LCD TV

Thanks to some suggestions and support, here’s what I did to get this to work in PPro:
    In
    Preferences -> Playback ->
I selected and checked all of the three options that appeared available:
    Adobe DV
    Adobe Monitor 1280×800
    Adobe Monitor 1280×720

Now I can see the timeline playing back on the MBP screen and the LCD TV screen, full frame, with letterbox or pillars depending on the input. I can’t “escape” or make smaller the TV screen but it’s serving its function as a big monitor in realtime

No idea which kind of PPro window it’s showing or what the resolution is, but it works.

    Many thanks,
    Robert
