Thanks, Steve. I appreciate your info. I’ve been somewhat reluctant to work much with Audition because I haven’t really understood from the documentation what happens with files and whether the activity is really nondestructive. It seems when I use Dynamic Link that Audition/Premiere put a new file with a different suffix in the Premiere timeline. Where did the original go? Is it around somewhere and can I restore it?
Please let us know if there are any references or tutorials you can point us to that would explain what is happening with the files. Most explain just “how to” do something but not “what is happening.”
I’m getting from your post that maybe Audition creates a project file that it modifies, somewhat the way Premiere creates project files that it modifies not just with edits but with EFX, titles, etc. Maybe in Audition there are project files and clip files that get modified depending on how you are working? I wonder–and if the original clip files are still findable in the Premiere project panel.

Love the jocularity . . . this thread is flying over my head . . . how are y’all constructing your slide shows?
A friend sent me a slide show made in Powerpoint (by MS). I could not figure out how to get it into Premiere.

Thanks, Craig, this is an interesting resource. I moved to Premiere because I didn’t like the X model but I’m a little disappointed with Premiere and the Adobe software model, for practical reasons.
Thinking again of FCPX and also of switching to Windows for a cheaper, more solid Premiere.
Here’s a notion I picked up from somebody about X and track-based programs:
I started with track-based NLEs (and track-based celluloid) as analogic to music scores written on staves with a separate staff for each line (hand in piano) or instrument, linked to a common timeline.
FCP X might be more like a post-John Cageian score written as floating in a large manuscript page with no controlling timeline, musical moments or events linked to each other spatially.
I guess plus database links, which Cage didn’t use.
What do you think?

I kept my MPB 2012 with OS 10.8.5 to keep running FCP7. Now I’m keeping it to run Pr CC 7.2.2 “2013,” which is 5 years old. I’m working on a film project that dates to 2008. I date to 1947 and am still working mostly fully. Steenbeck flatbed film editing machines had a good 25-year life cycle. These computer and software update cycles seem a little ephemeral to me but one has to pay attention.

Thanks, John. An Apple rep had the smart idea to plug the 4T drive into another computer–it loaded fine, including the seemingly corrupt folder. I deleted the last used folder and moved it back to my main MBP and it worked fine. Now is always a good time to back up, of course.

Thanks, Jeff. How would I know the hard drive has failed? Just from this finder click failure? It shows up on the desktop and in Finder if I don’t click on it. I can repair permissions. In fact, I can see and open folders within the drive in Finder if I click on another drive first except for the folder I was trying to work on in the AME.
Is there a test for a failed hard drive? It’s this open or open folder function that fails. Fortunately it’s backed up.

Now I noticed tonight that maybe when I leave the machine alone for awhile — eg 15 minutes– Activity Monitor shows the Free Memory has crept back up to 12+. I’ve noticed this cool-down effect with other operations, like being able to eject a hard drive after closing Pr Pro. Is this a thing?
