No trying to be a smartass here, but.
Ofc it is possible to edit over the internet. At what cost? It depends.
Since Marco seems to be on Mac only, it is perhaps harder.

HP RGS, I have loads of customers using this to edit, “inside” your shared storage at work. For all other editors connected to collaborate with your work. All you need is your edit bay at work have to run on a HP Workstation. Software is free. Remote computer from home (or where ever), can be Windows or Apple and doesn’t even have to be powerful one. Stable connection from your home is needed.

    Avid have solutions (to expensive?).

Blackbird is all over the net, editing. Not using DaVinci, but it is over the net.

Others as well. So, saying Steven and George can’t do it is wrong.

Or, is editing over the net also forced to have a third screen for video out? Then it is perhaps much more difficult. HP RGS works perfectly for assistant editors, logging or any off line work that don’t require a online/grade monitor. Producers and directors that already are on next production and just need to fix something fast.

Depending on how far you will want to push your system. I read somewhere that TB2 is only 4x, where as a PCI slot can be 4x, 8x or 16x. A typical GPU card is 16x. If this is the case and you want full speed Mac Pro are aboslete. This is not as saying Mac Pro will not work, nor does it say Mac Pro will give you bad performance. But as far as GPU acceleration in expansion chassis this could be “not perfect”. Then we come back to the endless discussion if you should build on Linux, Mac or Windows…

same happens if you start with a music file and want to add video to it after. I had to start with a video clip and THEN add the audio file to get the video in the “centre” track to be able to add crossdisolves.

I did it under “import from camera”, use archive. Then link to folder over the acctual P2 content.

    Cheers,

P.S. My 720p50 got wrong aspect ratio, hade to adjust manually. No numbers to check if it was correct done… Also some clips rendered out with rainbow-artifact-checker-board faulty images… dunno if that happened after I applyed slow or CC. It happens every time I try on one clip. Before it renders it looks ok, after render POFF…

…editing in DVCPRO HD might mean you have to MASTER in DVCPRO HD aswell…
Those DVCPRO HD decks don’t come cheap.

On the other hand mastering on HDV might not be the best option. Tough call.
A 38 min piece with loads of effects, slo-mo, CC and grafics took us 23 hours
to render when we choose “export to tape” (before we could acctually record
it to tape). This was on a dual 2.5Ghz G5 with 3Gb ram. Something wrong that
you notice while recording to tape….call me in another 23 hours…
You got the time and don’t want to spend the $$$$$ on a DVCPRO HD deck, maybe go HDV.

Other way could be you edit in native HDV, copy master HDV sequence to DVCPRO HD
    prepered sequence and render…

DVCPRO HD is less datarate then uncompressed SD 8bit, so no worrys on G-raid drives
    if going that route.

…the JVC has clearly better resolution. You can also buy SDI card for it (Im in Europe so I don’t know
about US prices but I belive you end up under 1000USD for monitor and SDI card). If going HD and a Decklink
or Aja card you can downconvert to SD SDI and use it for that aswell. As said you can also use a component
card with it. The S-video input is good enough for DV work.
JVC also offers more front buttons, less need to go into menu to change settings.
Price / performance, JVC is the winner over Sony 14L1.

    …go for Intensity HDMI.
IF, and I mean IF, you would like to capture uncomressed you CAN with this card.
(to do that you need HC3 or HVR-M25 with HDMI out)
But, it could be “better” to capture as native over firewire, edit as native and move to higher
domain IF needed when doing grafics and certain effects.
What are the connections on your Samsung LCD? If no HDMI, the Intensity HDMI don’t
work for client monitoring. Also using consumer grade LCD’s for monitoring is not
always “good enough”. Very few of those LCD’s are.
