I have FCS on my unibody 15″ Mac-Book Pro and Color runs with he Nvidia chipset but it is not exactly a power user system. I had a MacPro 2,1 8-core with a flashed 1G 5890 ATI card and a 12Tb disk array and Color got close to realtime for many tasks. I just sold that MacPro and I am going to the store to get a new one for the Resolve…
I would say that , yes if you have to run Color seriously a second box would be the way to go.

The Nvidia cards have much slower performance for Color than the ATI cards, you can still use it but the renders will be slower.

Well, maybe we should expand on this…
I think Apple has left their pro apps and hardware behind… and I own a NeXT cube which still runs from 1988….
I think the Current Mac-Pro is a bit of a slow machine for the $ and I just got rid of the mac-pro 2,1 8x 3ghz I was running Color on…

I downloaded the Magma 2-bay install guide and it does have info about the expansion box being supported in Mac-OS so it would probably work to add a Red-Rocket. I doubt that adding a second GPU would be supported on the Mac version of Resolve BMD wants to sell you a Linux system for that.

As far as I understand the PCIe expansion chassis is hardware transparent to the OS and could be easily added to expand the number of slots. I looked at these and they are as expensive as a Mac-Pro itself. Maybe someone makes a two slot box? I would think that having the SDI card and the Red Rocket on a separate chassis would work.

I don’t think network panel support has to be linux only and it is already built into the software for Resolve i.e. all the Linux machines out there running the DaVinci network panels. I think it is just going to take the developers a little time to impliment the panel support on the Mac.

I have a DaVinci 888 DUI with the network panels and I had bought a Euphonix set (MC-Color and MC-Transport) to run with Color. The DaVinci network panels are real tanks possibly a bit nicer than the CP series but the same fit and finish and weight.
The MC-Color/Transport are nice but I am sure I could take one of the 888 panels and smash them to bits without even making a scratch on the 888 panels…
There is allot to be said for pro panels and I think BMD is working to support more panels right now. Having a dedicated panel set designed for the system like Resolve or Baselight or Nucoda does speed things up and makes the room more “serious” I suppose.

I have been using Scopebox on a G5 Dual 2ghz for scopes on my Cintel Y-Front Telecine / DaVinci 888 DUI for years it has been great and very solid.
