Did you open the system profiler and look under Graphics to make sure the Q4000 is showing up in the OSX system?

I really like the idea of a Thunderbolt laptop and plan to get a 17″ Macbook Pro for running Resolve in the field and the Blackmagic Thundebolt 3D Studio box looks great.
However…..
Thundebolt is only 4X PciE which seems pretty weak for adding additional GPU’s which typically operate at 16X (6.4GT/S) per GPU. The Cubix operates at 16X and splits that amongst the slots in the box.
There are storage controllers which operate at 8X PciE speed…
So it just leaves me questioning the performance of a machine which is in a studio where you would want multiple fast GPU’s to work with and possibly faster storage than a thunderbolt port can support.

Well that is the problem with Steve Jobs, you never know where he is going, however with the sudden total destruction of FCP and X-Serve it seems fairly clear the direction they have taken with so called “Professional” users. I would venture to guess that a Mac-Pro with more PCIe slots is not in the cards, in fact maybe they will release a machine with no slots just a bunch of Thunderbolt plugs, who knows? There is this sort of insular group think at Apple that dismisses things outside the Apple universe, things like EDL’s Fast GPU’s and Blue-Ray discs, etc.
Good reason to build a Workstation PC to run OSX…….

When I put together the eSata Rocket Raid a few years ago it went something like this:
RR 2314 $160.00 3X Addonics Port Moutipliers $350.00 12X 1Tb Deskstars Enterprise Drives $2000.00 (a while back) 12Bay Enclosure $650.00
Total $3160.00 for 12Tb
Today with a Rocket Raid:
Rocket Raid 2722 + Sans Digital 8-Bay SAS/Sata enclosure $500.00 8 2Tb enterprise Drives $1400.00
Total $1900.00 for 16Tb
The Atto setup I have on Resolve now:
Atto R680 $950.00 Astek A33606 SAS Multiplier $600.00 20 SAS Disk Server Chassis $700.00 20 1Tb Hitachi Ultrastar Dives $2240.00
Total $4490.00 for 20Tb
The Atto solution is probably the best but a 16Tb Highpoint 8 Disk array with SAS connectivity for less than $2k is pretty damn good.
Computer junk gets cheaper by the minute.

One would hope that the next Mac pro would be rackmount and with more PciE slots and thunderbolt. Look at this board for what is available in workstation intel hardware these days: https://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=270-WS-W555-A2&family=Motherboard%20Family&series=Intel%205520%20Series%20Family&sw=5 with up to 12 cores and 7 high speed slots you could build a real GPU/CPU monster with this.
My fear is that Apple will dumb down the Mac Pro even more than it is now, i.e. a few thunderbolt plugs and fewer PCIe slots which would mean less internal GPU possibilities rather than more.

It could be that Apple has entirely forgotten that they make anything with “Pro” in the title….

Again it is a cheap solution, I have a R680 on the Resolve box now but that ATTO card alone is almost as much as a cheap 8Tb raid with the 2314, two Port Multipliers and drives. I have the 2314 on another machine now but it does work in Raid-5 for 2K DPX files. Horses for Courses and You generally get what you pay for…. If you need a “starter” Raid the Highpoint will do.

Look at the Highpoint Rocket Raid products. The Rocket Raid 2314 which is a 4-port eSata card which works with port multipliers and will support up to 20 drives and is cheap. There are also newer SAS controllers and HBA’s from them which are inexpensive and support allot of high speed sata 6g drives.
I have a 12Tb disk on a Rocket Raid 2314 which supports a single stream of 2K DPX very comfortably.

The SSD drives are allot faster than a 7200rpm drive, and you could potentially put the SSD boot disk in a optical drive space and then use all four trays for media storage.
