You can render with the full unscaled data option on and then in the setup tab just check on the output full range video in the setup for the SDI output on the Decklink card.

I have heard that Lcos projectors are less stable than DLP but maybe the newer ones are less so.

I really like Plasma display’s over LCD for their much wider dynamic range and their wide viewing angles. The drawback to Plasma technology is that it is less stable over time and has to be re-calibrated more often. So until there is a 40-50″ OLED screen that does not cost six figures I will calibrate more often…

I personally do not have problems with seeing rainbows on single chip DLP projectors and many people do not. I also think that newer single chip DLP projectors with 6-segment higher speed color wheels have mostly eliminated rainbow effect.

That said the Projection Design LED single chip DLP projectors look interesting, no color wheel and super stable LED illumination..

Have you looked at the InFocus SP8602? it is a 1300 lumen 1080P single chip DLP which seems to perform well. I like the LcOS projectors but stability is definitely an issue, as I have a 11UK plasma I understand..

Most cinema 2K projectors are going to be DLP and running a DLP in a grading environment will be at least a bit stable. You still have to watch out for declining light output with projectors that are not Xenon or LED light source but that is a bit easier than having to calibrate regularly for color stability.

You could load the quicktime into Apple Cinema Tools and use the “conform clip” function to change the QT header to 29.97 that is an instant change.

Will anything made on a computer last 30 years?

You could always speed change it from 30fps to 24fps with FCS-3’s Cinema Tools… it will then be more filmic…

From what I can tell it is probably the HD-Link Pro DP that does not support 1080p 30.

    Decklink supports 1080P 30

    Resolve has a setting for 1080p 30

The HD-Link Pro only seems to support 1080p at 59.94 and 60 but not 30..

    Maybe that is it?

23.98 and 29.97 do seem like total throwbacks but I bet they still exist because HD broadcast in the US of 1080i is 59.94… which is also dumb but probably there so legacy SD material can be up-rezzed to 1080i without cadence issues.

Iwould say that the new Thunderbolt I/O is a good investment as it gets you a 10-bit spigot from your machine.

You did not specify what 19″ set you are using but it is almost guaranteed that it won’t really be a calibrate-able display, in terms of a broadcast reference.

You can suffer with it but I would suggest saving up for a HP Dreamcolor 24″ which can be calibrated well and is a 30-bit display with good characteristics. It can be driven with a HDMI to displayport and will be the least expensive “real” reference monitor available.

  • I think the obvious bigger picture is that Color Grading used to require custom hardware (DUI, 2K,Pandora etc.) or specialized computers (early Resolve on Linux) but that is now all in the past. All of these systems from Resolve to Film-Master to Baselight and Mistika run on commodity hardware.

It used to be very expensive to buy an Avid for the same reason, now not so much. Look what happened with Final Cut sure there were a ton of Pikers who didn’t (and probably still don’t) know shit about what they are doing. But there were also a great deal of professionals who adapted the app (I was never a fan but I am a user) to professional environments buy setting it up properly.

So fast forward to a bunch of whiners asking how to calibrate their imac monitor to do color work, and good luck to them. I got Light-Space and a Hubble to do that. I have had jobs come in from other places that did not do proper setup and botched it.

I really like the Baselight but not every shop can build a business model around it. That said the high end machines are all merging into multifaceted “do it all” tools which are becoming less color only centric all the time.

So what are the other choices? Speed grade is about to be free and Scratch is stuck with a less powerful and more buggy toolset and frankly I think Film-Master is in a similar position where it is not a Baselight replacement and not much more powerful or stable than Resolve. I think BMD has priced a standalone color grading app (that is very powerful and very stable with allot of legacy tools) at the price color grading apps are all going to be in a few years. There will still be high end tools but their price will also decline.

People can wish for the Moore’s law genie to be placed back in the bottle but without a global collapse it’s not going to happen. When Computerized systems become software they inevitably become less costly over time.

And I believe as of the time I write this most of the replies on Red-User are of the unconcerned about this nature as well.

So you can call it partisan or whatever but that is just the reality and it’s not going back. Work will still go to people who have an eye and have setup properly to do the job. I suspect there will be more Grading apps available soon and as they are software they will continue to be added to and refined.
