Yeah it’s good to be aware of that as the codec does make a big difference in Preview times. Probably doesn’t matter for final export but final codec might be different from one to another. I might do some tests between Pro Res and Uncompressed to see how that compares in pvw and final out.

[Chris Borjis] “Is this really an issue though?”

I think this is a big deal as the paradigm – hate to use that word – has long been established in other platforms and even before that in linear editing. You might spend quite a bit of time working on a specific shot but when it’s done it should be done and it should play out at full rez, and full speed for tape out or export just like it does in Smoke, Avid, FCP etc. After working in broadcast for 15 years I think that having an unknown variable render time at the end would not go over well.

From what was announced at a MC 6 preview event Pro Res will be available in Mac and Windows unless that was incorrect info. But I agree that what Apple will do in regards to this is anybody’s guess since they’re a “I’m taking my ball and going home” kind of company evidently.

I did some tests a few weeks ago. I found there was a significant difference in speed between the different preview codecs. I think Pro Res was the best as far as speed and quality. I have a faster raid now so maybe I’ll compare that to U/C now. Also the Avid codecs were by far the slowest. Also Cineform would crash PPro when using it as a preview codec.

One thing I still like about Compressor is that it makes H264 as MOV files and not mp4. Seems more computers can read mov vs mp4. The quality is very good from Adobe encoders though.

I don’t know that that will slow things down. Compressed codecs take longer to render than uncompressed. It will take up more space though but not that much.

Companies like Adobe, Avid, Autodesk, and Genarts all figured out a great way. Deliver installer files that come with free trial periods, and have license utilities for moving a license from computer to computer. If you have an issue with the license, you can use it in trial mode until you get it sorted out. I hadn’t really thought about using the implications of the app store. Just one more reason not to bother.

Yeah this is one of the things I mentioned in a suggestion to Adobe. I see the benefit in how they are doing it but it’s very different from almost everything out there and on a longer project could be a major pain. I think they ought to add the option of using render files during export. I also think they need to adopt Pro Res in full like Avid seems to be doing. Clients ask for it and it’s the best codec I know of. Whatever multi-generational issues using something like Pro Res would be negligible.
