Oh, you meant a clone from a different machine. I thought you meant the same machine, which is why it didn’t make sense to me. I’m out of spare external drives right now. My one bootable clone, a SuperDuper backup, is off the laptop running Lion—CatDV is running fine there. The big machines remain on Snow Leopard and they’re as close to clones of each other as one can get. But I’ll give it a try. Right now I’d making a major part of my system inoperative since I no one can use the machine to log or view footage.

I supposed. I’ll have to dig up a large drive since this is a big system, an 8 core MacPro. There have been no hardware changes at all. Which would lead me to believe that it’s a software issue. Cloning is going to tend transfer a software issue. I’ll see if I can get it to work off the Timemachine backup.

In this case it’s two identical Mac Pros (even bought on the same day with sequential serial numbers) running the latest version of Snow Leopard. Both are FCP machines and both have QT 7 and QT X.
I watch machine 2 cooking, making the ProRes (proxy) proxies and it churns along, the proxies being saved on an external G-Drive connected to machine 1 via the eSata connection. I can see the proxy growing beyond 4 gigs, but when I come back later it’s much smaller, 500 Megs to 1.5 Gigs, and won’t play in QT 7. I’ve tried making the proxies using machine 1 and it works fine, the source files residing on machine 2 and the proxies on the above mentioned external drive attached to machine 1. Very strange. I’m trying to stay consistent with ProRes at 1920×1080, but it may not be worth it.

That happens automatically and transparently. I force their copy of CatDV to use the proxies only. Works faster over the network. The Mac portion of the network is gigabit while the PC side is still mostly 100 base. So using the proxies also benefits everyone. Plus I burn in the file name and timecode for the proxies. The “less skillful” can just write down what they see on the screen. Less for me to teach them. 😉

Or copy proxies off onto an external drive for them.

Wait, wait, it gets better. I am able to make the proxies from a different machine. So on machine 2, where I have actually grabbed the footage in FCP and then imported the files into CatDV does not allow me to create the proxies (which live on a shared drive on machine 1). They get about 1/4 of the way and fail. But on Machine 1 (where the proxy drive lives) I can read the master files across the network and then make the proxies. Oh, and get this, on machine 2 (where the masters reside) I can’t get the files to play properly. I click on the Movie tab and they “disappear.” Huh? Yup, it’s like they don’t exist. Back on machine 1 they’re fine and play across the network. I’ve tried reimported and reanalyzing the files, but it’s no good.

Yes, the files are larger than 4 gigs. All of the proxies successfully made exceed 4 gigs. They’re 4.77 up to 7.62 gigs and rendered without issue. Therein lies the rub.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

we’ve also had some crashes or losses with V-logger. Most of our transcriptions are done out of house and then we drop them into V-logger. But the in-house stuff I do with Transcriva and that works quite well. It also means I don’t have to teach someone how to operate CatDV correctly.

It’s odd, because it’s a short 2-3 clip, a single piece. Hard to see how it can be a composite of anything since it’s a continuous shot. But I’m making them go away by making them into path-based.
