Verbatim Issue and Crashes
We use Verbatim Logger for transcribing a lot of files. Most of our stuff is AVCHD and we created a WorkerNode routine that creates ProRes proxies from the MTS files. That works great for viewing the files in catalogs but Verbatim Logger won’t use the previews for transcription unless we set “Force (prefer over original)” in preferences. This works but then we have the reverse issue; all our footage that does NOT have proxies will not work in Verbatim Logger. Blarg… Is there way to set it to a “prefer the proxy if it is there” setting?
Also, we get a lot of crashes on Verbatim Logger… regardless of what type of clip we are transcribing. We have it on 5 systems (Towers and Laptops) and it is temperamental on all of them. Without warning, WHAM, it will close and you lose all the transcription you haven’t saved. My transcribers are getting pretty irritated to say the least. Anyone have suggestions?

Mac, PC, OS? Ram, clip length? All these things matter.
I’d probably say that you might try only working on Proxy in the verbaitim logger. That’s not based on anything other than all my clients are on proxy in the Verbatim logger.
Any of the Squarebox crew have any thoughts?

Mac, Snow Leopard, 16 GB of RAM, Dual Quad Xeons on our most robust systems. However, as I said, we have used it on different (Mac) machines (dual core towers and laptops) and the issue is the same. Randomly bombs during transcription.
Being on a proxy or original file doesn’t seem to change it either. We have tried both and still get crashes. Since we do have a large contingent of files that do not have (and do not need) proxies I can’t really test the “proxies only” (all the time) theory.
I would love it if someone from Squarebox could weigh in.

we’ve also had some crashes or losses with V-logger. Most of our transcriptions are done out of house and then we drop them into V-logger. But the in-house stuff I do with Transcriva and that works quite well. It also means I don’t have to teach someone how to operate CatDV correctly.

Sorry to hear about your verbatim logger crashes. There are two things that might help. Turn on the protected player (under Media Playback), and reduce the autosave interval (under File System).
As for selecting the proxies in preference to the original media we need to investigate that. It should do exactly what it says and only “prefer” the proxy but play the full res if there is no proxy but perhaps the verbatim logger behaves incorrectly in that regard.
Another option is to reverse the meaning of “proxy” and “full res” files. Instead of a mapping from MTS => ProRes files, set up a mapping from ProRes => MTS and check the “Allow import of proxy files before full res versions” flag (under Proxies & Thumbnails). There are some specialised workflows (eg. DSLR footage) where it can be convenient to work that way round.
