There should be a sequence header on each GOP, otherwise the stream isn’t DVD compliant.

The field order should be okay. If it were incorrect you wouldn’t see Encore re-encoding, but rather “jittering” on all movement once the finished DVD is played on a TV.

Is the file elementary (video only) or is it multiplexed (video and audio in the same file)?

Another thought: Was ProCoder set to place a sequence header on each GOP?

Is the MPEG-2 perhaps 704 instead of 720 pixels wide? Or is it a multiplexed file with MPEG-1 Layer II audio inside?

The disc still could be burned on a standalone DVD recorder. May guess is that the disc isn’t closed.

    Which model Sony burner?

Have you tried using a DVD-R instead of -RW?
Or if it is a very early Sony model it may be that it can only burn DVD+R or DVD+RW.

As playback from segment to segment probably doesn’t have to be seamless, you could put each clip in its own timeline and add all timelines to a “playlist” (in Encore 1.5.x).

If you are using Encore 1.0, did you update to version 1.0.1 yet?

If the disc was recorded directly with a DVD-camcorder or on a stand alone DVD recorder, it could be that the DVD isn’t “closed” and that it can’t be read on any other device than the one it was recorded with.

If you view the contents of this DVD in Windows Explorer, which folders and files do you see?

The problem could be that you got too much space for Encore’s liking. 😉 It sounds odd, but Encore seems to have a problem with drives that are very large. You could try to create a partition that is at least smaller than 1TB on the RAID, or (as a test) to use the system drive for a project and its assets.

  • Jana,

You can put each of the clips in its own timeline, link the button to the first timeline, set the “end action” of the first timeline to link to the second one and set the “end action” of that one to return to the menu.

But the transition from timeline #1 to #2 will not be seamless. Although the pause between the two will probably be shorter than in Encore’s preview, there will be a brief pause in playback. To make it look “natural” the break between the two clips should ideally be located somewhere where the video fades to and from black.

You could also try to join the two MPEG files with the help of the “MPEG Tools” in TMPGEnc. I don’t know whether or not TMPGEnc does this cleanly enough for DVD authoring purposes.

Btw: What application are you using to encode to MPEG-2 and what settings are you using?
